Wolfenstein 3D for PC came out.
Back when this game came out, pushing the FPS genre into the mainstream, nobody could've known how controversial violence against nazis would become
And if you want to remember how good it was you can play it in your browser now

I came in here thinking it was a thread About this 25 year anniversary
I spent a lot of time playing that game. The crazy thing was I usually was asking my dad how he passed the level because he would beat those games before I would.
I never played Wolfenstein much. Never really got into it. Now Doom, I played a lot, and Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior. And Descent was totally awesome--a super-cool mix of flight sim and FPS. I still enjoy Descent. Even set up an old win98 box to run it.

If you don't want to deal with win98 box, here is a port for modern computers: http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/
I'm old enough to have played the original Castle Wolfenstein on my 8-bit Atari, so I was super-geeked about Wolf3D. That led to an obsession with 90s first-person-shooters. At my old work, we had the PCs networked (Novell Netware, baby!), so we'd play multi-player Doom for hours on end.
After a while, the FPS games started to get a bit silly:
I was already an accomplished gamer when this came out. That stupid noise that the swirly thing made when it flew out haunts me to this day.
Oh man, Wolf3D!!! I remember installing the shareware version on some of the 386 machines in our middle school back then, so we could play it in secret during class. The only version I have of it now is the 3DO port of the game.

Haha, the ports were super weird.
3DO was like a port of a port (of a port?). It was the SNES/Mac version with higher res textures. The weirdest thing was that the PC version had 8 directions each normal enemy could face, but in SNES, 3D0, and maybe even MAC ports, all enemies always faced the player.
Playing the game with a 3DO Controller (or Gravis Gamepad) was a nightmare. Hell, even the original PC controls were awful by today's FPS standards.
In reply to ProDarwin:
The SNES port? You mean SUPER 3D NOAH'S ARK?
Out of all the console ports, the 3DO one isn't terrible. I think the next best one was on the Jaguar.
The 3DO controller sucked to begin with. I have an InterAct 6-button pad that I usually play mine with, and that's a little better than the stock 3-button pad.
Sadly, I've never played Super3D Noah's Ark very much. It has to be better than some of the other Wolf3D based games from that time period.
3DO controllers did kinda suck, but daisy-chaining them was so cooooool back in the 90s.

I wasted much time playing this game. I still remember when I finally beat the game (shareware version) and the camera turned around in the hallway and I saw Blaskowitz jump and shout YYYEEEEEAAAAAHHH!!!!!!

So, a friend's hard drive died. He was a baller and had 16 megs of memory in his Pentium. (I had four megs in a 386/40. That memory cost me $160.) He would boot to DOS from floppy, make a RAM drive, copy DOOM from a floppy to the RAM drive, and then play.
Later, the monitor died. Did you know that you can pipe monitor output to a printer?
I started with Wolf3D, then moved on to Doom. Used to play via direct phone connection and also with a super-long serial cable against friends. I knew I was playing too much when I closed my eyes during a university math exam and all I saw were the Doom walls spinning around as if I were running the maze...
Completely by coincidence, I was looking at how to get Doom running on my Mac just about 30 minutes ago. It's still the only game I have on my phone.

I used to play via direct phone connection as well. The serial cable never worked for us :( Actually, direct dial only worked about 1/2 the time... my friends could never get their IRQ set properly. Sadly, never had the luxury of playing on DWANGO.
Speaking of which... if anyone here would be up for an occasional multiplayer game of DOOM/DOOM2/Brutal DOOM/etc. let me know.
