4.4 Magnitude Earthquake!

Occurred along the GA/SC border at 10:23 PM EST 2-14-14. Larger magnitude than typical for the area. No damage at our house, but it was noticable. The cat is currently rather nervous.

Lightweight!

I was in San Fransisco for Loma Prieta, and in Northridge for that one.

The after shocks after Northridge were way bigger then that!

Sure, Cali has some quakes, but how many within a day or two of a blizzard?

Musta been like a giant snow globe, especially if it was powdery snow.

Yeah, we don't usually get much more than 2 or 3 and rarely one that you can actually feel. Last big one was the Charleston EQ of 1886. Pretty much leveled Chucktown.

But due to the differences in the soil types, depth to rock, and proximity of major fault lines earthquakes in the central and eastern US behave differently and cover/affect larger areas than the ones on the west coast. So most of our knowledge from recorded events is based on what happens on the west coast. It has only been in the past decade that the experts have really begun to realize all that information is not directly applicable to the rest of the country.

I figured it was one of those hot fudge brownie earthquake things shoved in the blizzard blender for those who are REALLY too lazy to chew.

Gah - I first read that as "shartnado"

I'm supposed to head to Greenville SC on Monday. Really apprehensive, as my travel plans have me going through Atlanta. If I end up stranded on the tarmac overnight, I'm going to be some pissed.

No thanks. We get way too many tornadoes and the remnants of most of the gulf hurricanes. On the plus side, our motorsports season is almost year round. And Atlanta Craigslist.

chez Curmudgeon shook like hell for a few seconds then all was normal. No damage. It scared the shart out of the kiddo, though.

I hate to admit- I'd buy one.

Supposed to be in the 60's next week in Greenville. Snow should be all gone, except for the few ugly mounds of what was plowed. My first earthquake though, I'm on the east side of Greenville and felt it quite well, roughly 95 miles from the epicenter. The fact that it came on the heels of what was predicted to be a snow event of epic proportions is pretty bizarre.

I was about 150 miles from it, I heard and felt it slightly. I was like someone was running up the stairs or the cats were fighting. I didn't really think much of it. My roommate asked me if I felt the shaking because someone texted him about it. He couldn't feel it downstairs, I felt it upstairs. I am assuming on the foundation you can't feel it as easy?

My first thought? Ice sliding off the roof.
