Posting for my son...he just created a new profile.  He has a freshly rebuilt (exchanged) Ford 460 engine that is going into a 95 f250.  The replacement engine is supposedly a 95 as well.  The rebuilders did not install the oil pump and said the correct oil pump intermediate shaft would need to be installed.  They gave him back his original intermediate shaft from his core engine. Neither of us have dealt with a Ford oil pump before, and Ford being Ford they have different setups for the same engine.  Where does the retaining ring go on the intermediate shaft (top/bottom end, middle)? Any other setup tips would be appreciated.

The retainer should go on the end of the shaft opposite from the pump.  It prevents pulling the shaft out of the pump when you pull the distributor.

In reply to JT1 :

Thanks for the help!  We came across some info about dislodging the shaft if the distributor was pulled up, but there wasn't any mention on installing the retainer.

Don't forget to pack the oil pump with Vaseline (or similar) to aid in priming the oil pump.

Not so much the pump but the pickup. But really you should have a oil pump drive socket and extension on a drill or impact to build pressure.
