Might as well recline your seat, then.

Some people are very uncomfortable sitting that upright, particularly for that long.

I'm not that tall, and I think to recline your seat anymore in an aircraft is just rude. So I'm the guy suffering for my own idea of politeness with the a-hole in front of me in my lap and the person behind me basking in reclined luxury.

Overnight flights, I just gotta recline though, and I know it sucks, but I ask first.

You can ask the flight attendant to reseat you if the plane isn't full, or work out a switch withthe most petite person in your surroundings... or just kick that berkeleyer in his spine the whole way there for using his seat like it was designed :)

So the person in front of you should suffer because you think they should?

While it seems as if they go back into your face, it's not really that much. It's more amplified by your feelings that someone is invading your space.

BTW, first class FTW.

I don't mine folks reclining, so long as they set it and leave it be. The ones that go back and forth a million times frustrate me.

Blame the airlines for packing us in like sardines. The guy that reclines is just trying to not suffocate himself.

Too bad it's like a 1000% price jump to first class.

A few flights back, I was lounging in my Exit row seat during boarding, not reclining of course because I am not a DB. The last open seat is behind me, in that 1/2 row. The last guy gets on the plane, and I kid you not, he is 6' 8" tall.

I just stood up, moved back a row, and sat down. Hey, I'm 5'10" and there was no way he was fitting back there. Free booze from the Attendants for my sacrifice.

Flying back from Beijing years ago, full plane. On the tarmac, the guy in front of me forcefully reclines his seat and breaks the mechanism. 13 and a half hours jammed into that seat, I should have demanded to trade places with him.

I tend not to recline out of courtesy for others, but then I also tend to avoid airline travel as much as possible.

Frequent business flyer here and bean-counters invariably say 'nyet' to first class.

I've seen planes where you couldn't put the tray table down if the passenger in front of you reclined his seat. It really is rude these days.

While we're at it...some other suggestions for air passengers:

-the seat belt sign is not a suggestion. Stay in your seat. Period.

-take a bath sometime within 48 hours of your flight

-if you do bring food aboard, please choose something that won't splash, squish or spew upon your fellow passengers

-cover up, no one wants to see your tats up-close-n-personal

-turn off your device for take-off and landing. No, really. Turn it off, not just pretend.

-manage your carry-on luggage. This isn't your personal jet.

In reply to bludroptop:

i was with you right up until the turn off your device part. thats pretty universally considered BS and an arbitrary demand due to out of date regs and ideas of "electronics"

edit: and the seatbelt sign. sorry, but if i have to pee, i'm sure you'd rather me do it in the crapper than the seat. having recently traveled on european and asian airlines and then back on united, it is surprising how paranoid they are about turbulence on the us airlines. ANY amount of turbulence gets the seatbelt sign on united, while the other airlines won't turn the sign on unless it gets bad, or they've been told it might get bad.

i've literally been on entire 3-4 hour flights where the fasten seatbelt sign was on the whole time because it was slightly bumpy.

Agreed. They barely move at all. I recline immediately after the attendants sit down before take off and leave it there. I can't sit that upright. It doesn't bother me if the person in front of me does the same thing.

If everybody would just demand to pay 20% more for their flights, we could have more room, better maintainance, and something other than a bag of pretzels for lunch.

I'm 6'2", 245 and it doesn't make one single ounce of difference to me whether the seat is ahead or back. I am still miserable being crammed into a flying Greyhound bus.

i did not say anyone should suffer, i sometime get some good information when i post something that is a issue for me, and you are correct it is more of a feeling of someone in my space, i will not recline unless the seat behind me is empty.

Well, compaining that people should not recline does seem to say that they should not recline at all. Therefore, if you need to recline to relieve pain, you can't, thus I'm extending your complaint.

Thankfully, I do not suffer, nor do I recline all that much. But I know people who have, and do, and they can be helped a little by reclining. so...

I also try to just let people live. Flights are transient events that will be over, soon. So as long as I can get in and out (and I've never seen a seat that reclines so much that I can't get out), I'll let them be. It's very easy to complain, but more satisfying to not care.

My last flight from seattle to detroit, I ponied up the $59 for delta's economy comfort seating. Way better than the back rows, plenty of leg room and no worries if the seat ahead is reclined.

On turbulence - damn right keep it buckled. I was on a flight to india where the turbulence was so bad 1 guy ((unbuckled but sitting down) flew up to the ceiling & landed in the row behind him (on someone else). Almost no notice - the seat belt light dinged and as they were announcing the upcoming turbulence the plane dropped 12 feet. F that S.

I have to recline. My lower back hates life when I have to sit straight up, even for short periods of time. Also it seems to accelerate my motion sickness when I sit upright. A slight recline makes all the difference. I always ask the passenger behind me before I do it though.

Frequent flyer here. A slight recline doesn't interfere with the person in the seat behind. Full recline does and I dislike it when people do it to me. It invariably happens to me but the biggest person on the plane will end up right next to me. Been lucky lately, that only seems to happen on the smaller commuter plans that only have business/economy class. On my longer flights my frequent flyer status has gotten me upgrades to first class. Lots of room.

Upgrades to first class are often cheaper if you buy them at check-in. If you get there a little early you might be able to snag a couple. Either that or the economy plus suggestion.

The knee defender thing is actually very illegal because it locks the tray table down preventing it from moving in an emergency. That's also why the latches for they tray tables will only move in one direction in exit rows as well. I'd hate to have to evacuate an aircraft with one of them in the way.

I am 6'4" - about 10 years ago a lady in front of me reclined her seat so far, I could read the same book she was. Literally the top of her seat back was 2" from my face.

Flight was full - no moving. Business travel - employer will not pay for 1st class.
