My recently deceased Neon ACR Coupe has been temporarily replaced by a 1996 Corolla. Seeing as I am not much into driving an appliance to work every day, i am thinking of selling it in favor of an 86 Supra with a N/A straight 6.
The Supra seems to be impecciably maintained, as it is beautiful inside and out. Asking price is $3500, but I can get it for $2500.
One, is that a fair price?
Two, do that gen Supra have issues that I should know about?
The Corolla has 240,000+ miles, the Supra has the same number despite being ten years older. I figure a well maintained Supra with the same mileage as a beat up Corolla should at least be a wash, if not favor the Supra.
Thats the first year for the MKIII right? The only MKIII experience I have is with a mint, low mileage one so I can't say how well they age mechanically, but I will say the A/C has a vent below the steering column pointed at the driver's crotch. That is perhaps one of the most brilliant features of that car and I have yet to see anything on newer cars that parallels that feature's simplicity, utility, and genius. I'd trade all the blind spot monitors, in dash weather reports, and back up cameras in the world if I could get a crotch vent in my car. I'd even pay the same price for the vent as all of that electronic crap.
Many 80s cars had crotch vents. Might have had something to do with the short shorts everyone wore back then. Best not to think about it.
All I know is I wore a kilt for part of my wedding reception and drove that car home after, and that plus 80's crotch vent equals profit. Also, on a possibly related note, my wife is now pregnant. Just something to think about. MKIII supras may increase virility.
They are insanely heavy, but otherwise pretty cool. The 200hp in a 3500lb+ car is likely not significantly quicker than your corolla.

Not super fast, but rwd+lsd= WIN. People should worry less about fast and more about fun anyway.Also "insanely heavy" means easy to add lightness to by removing heavy useless crap (my mkiv weighed 2749 with a full tank). Gut the thing if lightness is important to you.
IIRC 7m engines had slow oil return passage routing so dont run it hard and low on oil at the same time (not smart to do in anything in my opinion).
They look nice, but have a massive spaghetti monster of vacuum lines under the hood.
Which kind of 86 Supra? the Mk. II was built through the early part of 86 and was sold as an 86, the Mk. III was introduced as an 86.5 model - I had one. Nice, but heavy car. Wonderful GT car, not really a racer. I always preferred the styling of the Mk. II. A fellow I worked with had an 86, with the flares and rear spoiler, and I really wanted that car.

My Cutlass has a crotch vent as well.

Not that the 96 Corolla is a bad car, nor that I like it either... but is there anything that can be done to make it somehow cool or unique?
