It is British, it is 13 years old, but I always thought it would cost more.

sounds about par.... http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=land+rover&catAbbreviation=cta&minAsk=1000&maxAsk=5000
They're awesome vehicles, very capable. I've never met a Land Rover freak who would tell you to stay away. They're the One True Land Rover.
I think the guy posting the ad simply left off a 0 in the price.
Don't compare their prices to Discos or Range Rovers.

Defender, not Discovery.
Yup, flagged for removal already. The scammers like to use numbers like $2900 or $4900, I'll bet if you searched that particular Craigslist right now you'd find a bunch of similar vehicles all selling for the same price from the same person with the same gmail address.
So how's this scam work? I show up with cash and drive away a car or do I get robbed in the parking lot?

You email them and get a reply along the lines of:
"Thanks for your interest in the car. The car is in great condition. The car is in some state other than yours. I have the price low because I am in Iraq/Afganistan/have cancer/had to move for business. I am using ebaysales for checkout to protect us both. Please fill out the information there so we can have a quick transaction.
Thank you,
Bill American"
And I will ship to your door for free. Got that on every scam I played with. They ask you to send the money by Western Union to the fake E Bay address, they and your money disappear.
I want a Defender even though I have absolutely no use for one with my current habits.
That's all I had to say, just hoping that talking about it will make this feeling go away.

Defenders are now legal for import from england, the 25 year rule is cool. Except for the fact that you'd be buying a 25 year old landy from england... I think syphilis would be a better idea.
Scam prices are always lower than $5000, at which point the fraud police will step in. The car is yeah, always in a crate, on a boat, somewhere else. They never deal in person.
Thanks. I'm still holding out for the 1942 WW2 Harley flattie soaked in cosmolene sitting in a crate that I hear about in highschool.
The one that I heard in highschool was the Corvette available for an ultra low price but the owner committed suicide in it and is was months before they found is decomposing body.

I think there are still some import restricitions on syphilis .
IIRC the one that is worth importing is the 110 V8 which unfortunately is a little rare over here, too. But only a handful were imported into the US so even projects are major money. Yes, I've occasionally been looking...
What you do is buy one in decent condition, swap out the chassis for a galvanised one (it'll still be titled as an '85 over here even with the new chassis), generally refurb it a bit and stick it on a westbound boat. If you're feeling really generous, you might upgrade the V8 to a later one, too.
You'll need to log in to post.
