Metal trigger plate snap trap, has to have a metal trigger plate so you can bend the plate for a hair trigger (I usually aim for "thump on the table" sensitive), bait with peanut butter.

I'm late to the party here, but for years I've had excellent success with the metal trigger snap traps baited with a ju-jube. Cut the ju-jube in half and mash it onto the trigger. Mice seem to find them irresistible, they don't make a mess (like peanut butter can), and usually, you can reuse the whole setup for a year or so, until the ju-jube has the consistency of concrete. Just caught one of the little buggers on my barbecue last night - the joys of country living!

In the garage, a car ramp placed next to a 5 gallon bucket with about 6" of anti freeze is great. In the morning just go fish out half a dozen dead blotted floating mice.

My dad owns a pest control company. His go to is peanut butter, then chocolate syrup, Hershey's is ok but the hot fudge type that's thicker is better
