I came into possession of this Alpine "Type-R" 8" subwoofer and enclosure. It's a rather expensive speaker, and I have no interest in booming cars, so I would like to sell it. However, I noticed that there is some cracking on the top surface of the cone/diaphram. Can anyone tell me if this is "they all do that - doesn't affect anything" deal, or a "that speaker is toast, terminal failure" deal?

Cone cracking = bad. Quite bad.
Looks like mechanical damage, either it was hit by something round or the voice coil jumped past it's xmax.
The cone should always be defect free

D'oh! OK thanks for the help... Such a shame, but at least I didn't pay anything for it. Anyone in the STL are need a free enclosure for an 8" sub?
That is a very odd looking ring. It almost looks like the voice coil was trying to pull back faster than the cone could return. Or, somebody just put something on top of it and put a crease in it.
I would still play it until it gave up. Many a speaker has been run with a knocked in nose cone, it is not the end of the world. Have you hooked it up to see if there is an actual issue?
If it is just an 8", it won't turn you into a ground pounder, but it would add some nice sound. They don't take long to hook up and try.

The dust cover doesn't really do much though, it's not really doing anything mechanical.
I agree on the odd crease, it could be that someone ran way too much power thru it or didn't do their theile-small calculations right.
You could hook it up to try....but I know that crease will seriously impact the sale value
