I got into an accident with some bozo driving a 78 C10 way too fast. In short, my Grand Am is probably totaled. Thankfully, his idiocy kept him from being injured. Seat Belts kept the kids and I safe. Son had a seat belt bruise, Daughter hurt her back slightly, my hurts more than slightly but none of us had problems when X-Rayed. Front end of the Pontiac is toast, however.
Remember, Buckle up.
It seems like there have been a number of wrecks recently.
Glad everyone is OK for the most part.

happens every fall, and during the first big snow storms of the year.

Thanks for posting this a few minutes before I'm leaving the office .
Do I need the hunting permit before or afterwards?
Glad that everyone is ok.

We've got the Natchez Trace for that. It's nicknamed "the deer road". I was taking it up to Nashville once, and one evening up in Tennessee there had to be a hunter's dream: it looked for all the world like 10-15 deer in a field. Amazing sight. I live in Mississippi and it's still Deer Heaven, sometimes literally.

It's illegal in some counties to pickup roadkill of that sort. If they catch you doing it, I imagine.

My Inlaws, living just over the Cali border from Reno, hit 3 dear in one night on 395 heading to Reno. Be careful out there, and get some of those little stick-on anti deer noise things.
I just drove back from around the Cali/Nev border area and must have saw 5 dead deer on the road, they are out there like GTV6 warned you. The only other hazard out numbering deer were CHP, luckily my pickup has a cloaking feature of peeling paint that makes it invisible to police.

I went on a 25 mile jaunt on Sunday and saw at least five kills on I-71.
I say at least, because it's hard to tell if two halves of a deer went together and one just got carried along, or if it's two deer and the front half of (at least) one dragged itself off the road before quitting.
I had a nice 6-point refuse to yield this morning. Get off the road! You are basically lunch to me!
Deer pesky, but they almost always yield. Moose on the other hand think they own the road.

They don't work. Pop smashed a doe with his truck that had those.
In reply to RealMiniDriver:
The locals at the Army Depot had them on their cars and swore by them, but either way they are not 100%.
Remember if you see one, there's always another nearby.
OTOH, I have a friend where the deer hit him! Twice in one week, they came bounding of of the woods down onto the road, and WHAM, into the driver's side door. It was funny the first time with the insurance company....the second one wasn't reported.
Those little deer whistles don't work 100% of the time, but I'll settle for the 80% or so they work.
Road kill as food. Some of the more enterprising soup kitchen-type organizations around here have taken to accepting the deer. As long as it's fresh, etc...caused a bit of a rucus a year ago, but if it helps feed hungry people, where's the argument?
Depending on how it's hit, if the guts bust open, it's not great for the taste.
I hit a deer one morning with my first Firefly turbo. The first day I got my latest Swift GT, I flew by one standing on the shoulder. Last week, in the same car I saw one (just) jump out of my way, in heavy fog.

I got knocked into the ditch by a deer that broadsided me one night while I was putting along on my old Kawasaki dualsport. Sumbitch almost pawed me to death trying to get his hooves back under him, too. I figure he was looking for revenge.
[edit] D'oh! Cheebus! I forgot to say that I'm glad to hear that your family is OK and not badly hurt. Sorry about the accident.
Doctorblade,
Glad the accident wasn't much more than a stark confirmation of how important seat belt use is. I won't leave my driveway without a belt on, I've seen too many horrid results from not wearing them.
I can't count how many deer hit claims I've dealt with at work. Last year, we had one where the deer actually went through the windshield of a Ford Expedition and into the cabin. Thankfully, the driver wasn't seriously hurt. The mess inside the truck was beyond nasty, made me sick to my stomach looking at the pictures.
