A shining example of why I hate MS Windows with a burning passion that knows no bounds.

Trying to install Turbotax 2013, which is about the only reason I ever have to boot into windows rather than Ubuntu Linux. No joy. I do a search. Seems the internet is littered with people in the same boat as me. Windows 7 box, all updates applied, and can't install Turbotax.

Probably related is the fact that since I installed some new software relevant to SDR (that's Software-Defined Radio) I've been getting a sort of ominous warning from windows saying that the disk needs to be checked for "consistency". When it runs the check, it reports that it can't do the check because the system needs to be restored to a point prior to the recent software installation. Go in to system restore, pick restore point, and press go. Windows responds with "must check disk first". So okay. Reports can't check disk while in use, would you like to schedule a scan on bootup? And around and around we go.

At this point, I guess I'll buy a new hard drive, and re-install Win7 from scratch. This install worked decent for about 3 years. Another 3 and I'm sure Win7 will have outlived its usefulness.

Just do it on TurboTax.com. I haven't installed their software on my computer in several years. Bonus, since it runs in a browser, you can do it in Linux.

Interesting. Did you purchase it (license?) from the website? Can you use the website when you have a CD copy?

The reason I ask is that you can get Turbo Tax a fair amount cheaper from Costco then on the site.

I'm old. I buy my software on shiny CD's. Before that, I bought software on 3.5" diskettes, and before that, on 5.25" "floppies".

I own the CD. It will not install. I have already tried the "regpermissionfix" from the Intuit website. It did not noticeably improve the situation.

I am learning more about msi windows installer and I think that may be related to the problem.

You know why it was named "Windows" don't you? It is named that to remind all of those in tall office buildings that there is an easy way out of dealing with the OS.

You know that old saying about democracy being the worst form of government, except for all the other ones? That's how I feel about the Mac OS.

Because CD gives illusion of privacy of information.

I had same issue with my install. Updated windows and got the same issue. Turbo tax pointed me to a .net issue. I forgot the exact error message so I did the install again (1 time faiked before update; 1 take failed after this was a 3rd try) and inexplicably it installed fine. I was just expecting the same error.

Interesting. I had read about the .net thing, but assumed mine was up to date. Can you be more specific? Is it an update that would not be part of a regular "Windows Update?"

Each major version of .Net is separate and some software will use different versions than what may be installed on the system.

If you go to Windows Update and check in the Optional updates tab, you might see some .NET options.

Also make sure your Ofice and other products are up to date by clicking on the link to install Microsoft Update (yes I know, it is incredibly stupid).

I'll bet your Win7 system has a failed Java install. You can test the Java software at oracle.com.

My Win7 desktop wont install any Java based programs due to non function java thingy.

Oh god, you might be right, Oracle released an update recently for the Java client.

Adobe released one for Flash Player as well.

I would remove any/all Java installations and go to Java and download and install the latest version.

See if that helps.

Argh. The entire install seems berked. Went to java to verify and it said "could not verify". Uninstalled old java from windows control panel, installed new java. Install went without a hitch, but when I restarted the browser, same result--unable to verify. I've run virus scans by AVG and searched for malware via malwarebytes. Only offender was some browser toolbar, which I think I removed successfully. Also ran Hijack This, and I see a ton of services and a lot of lines that end with (file missing). The deeper I dig, the berkier it gets.

Why don't you just install TurboTax for Linux? Oh yeah, because they don't make it.

You could have gone to www.taxact.com and been done in less time than it took to attempt TurboTax.

That's the site I've used for years. This is the first year I won't be doing my own and letting the wife's accountant handle it.

the only time I "hate" Mac OS is when I want to do something that only runs on Windows … for me anything and everything about Win. sux
