We are goin' to the Winchester
I used to have a stoner house mate who thought about this stuff all the time. I mean really, seriously was concerned about what WAS going to happen when the inevitable happens and the zombie virus spreads. He made me read the zombie survival guide and asked what I thought about it. I told him I thought it was funny but kinda took itself too seriously. He looked me dead in the eye and told me it was serious and the threat was real and if I didn't start preparing I was just meat.
A few months later he began storing his urine in jars in his room and started buying lots of guns. We made him move out at that point.
Remember that if there are Zeds at the bottom of the ocean, they can bloat and float to the surface...Wide open praries with below ground bunkers are your best bets.
Stay away from big cities, apartments, and highways.
Seriously...read World War Z.
Max Brooks is the man!
oh man, society would evolve into warring walmart factions too thinly stretched and zombie warn to unify.
where the zombies ever left land
Ala Maximum Overdrive (in a sense).
I've always though sea/ocean would be best... but then I think about the Resident Evil movie. Birds/animals infected, scratch that idea. Underground is good, as long as the zombies are really stupid. I don't like this talk about holing up and fighting though. We're talking BILLIONS of dead people walking. There are lots of them. In a major city, there could be a million alone. So egress is most important, the only way you'll actually be able to fight the zombies head on is going to be with military equipment (and pray they are just regular ol' zombies, and not super zombies).
What is the expiration date on a Zombie? ie. how long will a zombie walk/crawl/bite after infection? This has a huge impact on survival strategy since it's plausible to stay mobile at sea for a few months but not so for a few years.
Speed tribe. Chart a course, clear it, or not, & zoom. I haven't decided on a food source yet, until that gets sorted, we'll just steal from &/or eat people. I prefer domestic pets, but I wouldn't want to get ostracised for being an oddball.

agreed.

i think this is the big question for the long-term viability of any plan. are we talking "Shaun of the Dead" slow-moving but relentless zombies, or "28 Days Later" rabid, sprinting zombies? or are we talking "I Am Legend" (not really zombies) uber-athletic, jumping zombies?
for the latter two i think a big-box store would end up being a deathtrap.

Too thinly stretched? There are so many Walmarts per square mile in the US that we really should only be considering SuperWalmarts at this juncture.
In reply to Giant Purple Snorklewacker:
NO,no, no. Walmart Distribution Centers! Uber thousands of square feet full of survival stuff. For defensive purposes look up " forklift driver Klaus" on YouTube for training.

you can have your WalMart. I'll be boarding up the doors at Costco with hot tubs and 55" plasma TVs.
actually, now that i think about it, i noticed last time that Costco has perfectly useable rolldown steel doors on the entrance. and skylights for entry on the first night of the ZA. the trick is to get in while it's closed and empty...then it's yours. but you need a group to keep it, b/c you need to defend not only from zombies, but from other folks.
What about holing up at a outdoor sporting goods place? Dicks comes to mind. One way up the stairs, one door, tons of stuff for every imaginable situation, and you have your guns and ammo on site!
On the other hand, I think Andy from Dawn of the Dead woulda made it if he was smart enough to stash rations. Seems like a pre-fortified gun store with a room full of rations would be a GREAT place to hang out.
I'm from Canada, lived in the North for a while.
Zombies are cold-blooded near as I can tell. I'll just head north. They should freeze solid in winter. Easy pickings for the chainsaw.

Sounds exactly like a guy who used to do maintenance where I worked. He had arguments with his mops and brooms. He was always talking to himself; everynow and then he's ask one of us a question. We all had the feeling if we didn't tell him what he wanted to hear, "things" would start flying. He's gone now. His National Guard unit was redeployed to Afghanistan. We got in touch with his commander, told him what he had been doing. Made no difference.

Obviously, this is more a mental exercise for us Canucks then these poor southern bastards.
As Guns and Roses once said, "You're gonnnnaa diiiiieee", while we'll be sitting in our igloos clubbing baby seals.
Everyone has their own theories, but mine is that the zombies will win unless people catch on very early. Society just can't come back from an outbreak like the one at the beginning of Dawn of the Dead.
So I assume that wherever I choose to hole up might be where I spend the next 20 years. Walmart isn't going to cut it. Your Alamo is going to have to be self-sufficient for food, water, and power, and defensible against tens of thousands--or more--zombies. Don't forget too, that the occasional living shiny happy person can spoil all your careful planning, so you have to be prepared to fight those, too.
In a short-term outbreak, my ideal defensive position would be one of the old Civil War-era stone forts along the East coast--Ft McHenry, Ft Sumter, something like that. The walls would be impregnable, as the forts were designed to withstand infantry assault and heavy bombardment. Nothing would get in...that's the easy part.
But how long could you last there? I'm not sure, but the only viable truly long-term option seems to be a very, very remote island like Ascension Island. That, folks, is the middle of nowhere.
I think the only real way to ensure active survival would be to mow down as many of them as possible. Sure, you can hide out, but eventually, resources run out. I think an active raid in between hiding in Walmart playing Xbox would be a good idea.
I still say a big boat is the best bet. You and a few others get on the boat and take out into the middle of the ocean. Why would zombies travel out into the middle of the ocean for a couple people and for that matter how would they know you are there? There is plenty of food from fishing.
+1 for the mention of World War Z. While I don't have a perfect plan for suvival, I agree with highways becoming clogged and impassable. Secondary roads will to. Either find trails and 4x4 or rails. Hijack a train or just use the RR right of way to get where you are going. No traffic, little population unless near a city, and can get you nearly anywhere. If zombies freeze in the north, will they dry out in the desert?

They'd probably burn pretty good once they dehydrated. But if they didn't fall fast enough, that could be a problem.

I don't know the answers you seek but if you gaff them and tie them to the dock you can use them for crab fishing. I'm not sure if eating the crabs would turn you into a zombie then or not though.

I plead ignorance about many aspects of Zombies, and this is one aspect I'm kinda fuzzy on. If you cooked and ate a Zombie, would you become one? And if so, and you instead used them as crab bait, would you end up in even worse shape, with a bunch of Zombie crabs? And if so, how would you be able to tell one from a non-Zombified crab? And would a Zombie crab take Zombie bait in the first place?
Apparently the Zombie learning curve ain't gonna be easy.
According to Max Brooks' take on the subject, scavengers can sense the zombie virus and won't feed on the infected. That's why they take so long to decompose: no bacteria is eating away at them.
I need 5 things.
Food, Ammunition, Sniper Rifle (LONG range), SMG (mid range), and Samurai sword (in the unlucky event that they get too close...or I run out of ammo too quickly.)
Three people with a tent in a trench in the middle of the prairie would survive just fine. Three shifts of watch duty, three shifts of "hunting and gathering", and three shifts of sleep.
Left 4 Dead is good preparation. As is Borderlands...
Also, it cannot be said enough on this subject, read Max Brooks novels...I gave my little brother World War Z for his birthday...it's never too early to prepare.
