Air Soft vs Paint Ball vs Laser Tag and GO!!!
I like the concept (and cost of Air Soft) paint ball seems messy and more expensive and Laser Tag seems to be the best of all but with higher upfront costs and less people playing because of that.
Thoughts. This will be a family game consisting of me, the wife, and Thing 1 and Thing 2 (11 & 8)

I would be hesitant about air soft or paint ball with 11 and 8. Laser or possibly the new high end nerf.
I agree, preteen kids and high velocity projectiles? bad idea.
Like Brian, I'd say go with used Laser equipment / nerf.
Nerf is out of the question for a few reasons, 1. consumables nerf is ridiculously expensive to replace darts 2. durability, the new nerf stuff is fragile 3. range yeah might as well give them foam swords.
I used to do my understanding of air soft with my dad and .177 bbs. First to yell loses. Kids these days. Wusses

The last time I played airsoft, i was getting welts through 3 layers of clothing. I had bruises for weeks. Its piles of fun, but im not entirely sure taking kids that small to it is a good plan. Theres walmaet guns that run...200fps or less. Slow. Bit of sting and nit much else. Then theres.....field limits. 350+. Those hurt.
The other side is weapon safety. Im not worried about you and yours. Its the other little hambeasts that got mommy to pop dor a kalishnikov rep and want to go rambo that you need to worry about.
Oh no this is for family use. Maybe a few other kids might join but definitely not for a pro/adult level. I am leaning toward laser tag. The systems seem to have gotten really cheap for DIY and I was thinking of building a few Storm Trooper Blasters to use.
I love laser tag because it is hard to argue with (I hit you - no you didn't!).

And other parents are more likely to let their kids play. Plus...lasers!

The new nerf rivals line is pretty heavy, 14+ recommend. And for cheap shooting, you can sub out cheese puff balls for the ammo.

I still feel like laser needs improvement. It could be so good, but the vests are a bulky and the weapons don't always seem very accurate (despite the fact your shooting a beam of light).
When they make clothes embedded with hundreds of point of contact and the ability to play laser tag outside in a realistic battle environment, I suspect it'll make the other option pale in comparison.
You can see real bullets, so all the others are kind unrealistic.
Plus laser systems are pricey!

It used to be just dig the BB out and go on with your day. Quick hospital visit maybe and they'd send you home with "boys being boys"
Now there's CPS :(

The nerf mega sniper....wicked. ive been popped by my own before.
Personally, I prefer paintball. Airsoft IMHO, is for LARP'ers living out their CoD/BF video games.
I'd recommend just some open field days at the local paintball place, they'll usually help noobs and not throw them to the wolves. After getting the hang of it, look into the scenario games.
I attended the Oklahoma D-Day when I was 16 and ran around with a 10 shot stock class pump the whole weekend. I might have fired 250rds the entire event. D-Day was by far the best time I ever had in my high school years.

Id agree with this, But i did a fair bit of paintball as a younger guy.
There is a local group that puts on a 24 hour scenario game. Might be the most fun Ive had with PB. Find a local field and give ti a try with rental gear.
In reply to java230:
One piece of gear to add on top of rental gear is a throat protector. Every now and then, you'll get caught forgetting to keep your chin down.
try to find some local feilds and try each trhings out for the cost of rentals vs buysing is going to be cheaper if you done like it. i use to do airseolf and and have been out in a few years, getting the itch to go back out again with brother and his kids also since i have all the gear we need to shoot one night at a local event.
