I figured since us BMX guys had the thread i'd figure I ask the skateboarders here. What are some of the old school greats you have videos of or watch, mainly freestyle and flatland, even new guys, as that's what i'm learning into and always been interested in. Yes I have watched Rodney Mullen and am currently reading his book
I guess though freestyle/flatland is kind of dead in today's skating world huh?

Freestyle is dead but it still exists way underground. Freestyle essentially became street. Check out some of the current tech street that's getting thrown down (maybe check out the SKATE contests at The Berrics). Mind-boggling flip tricks.
Check out Chris Haslam, Chris Cole and Eric Koston for some recent sick tech stuff.
Almost Round 3 is almost 10 years old now, but it's a classic vid. Maybe check out the Lakai "Fully Flared" vid from 2007 as well--some epic stuff there.
As for oldschool--Santa Cruz--Wheels of Fire is hard to top.

For some reason your thread reminded me of the Hoodoo Gurus....I think because of all the o's you put into guru.
Sorry, nothing useful to add about skating.
TJ- hahaha
gamby- I'll have to check those out for sure. I have been watching some Rodney vs. Daewon lately though. I currently have a video of Lynn Cooper, kind of a chopped video lol
I grew up playing Pro Skater so any of those guys i've always watched, Eric Koston has always impressed me for being street. While you are right about it essentially becoming street, I think flatland is still going strong, just like you said, in the underground.

This is the documented "birth of modern skate" and the place your research must start.

This was my skateboard era and freestyle was already on the way out, no one did it in the scene I was in, probably because no one could do it, its pretty crazy. Still have my "Bonite" Lance Mountain future primitive, G&S trucks, Bones III wheels.

That was one of the motivating factors that got me back on a skateboard.

Also check out the old Powell-Peralta videos: Bones Brigade Video Show, Future Primitive, Ban This!, Propaganda, and The Search for Animal Chin. All good stuff.
And if you have Netflix Instant...... there is a great documentary about Christian Hosoi and his rise and fall, really incredible story...... I think it was called "Rising Son" or something similar.
Yeah, i've watched a few Powell's and love them! I should watch more Netflix, i'm going to see if I can find some videos, never really looked lol
this video actually got me back into it lately, been out since high school and buying THPS:3 helped too

I still break out the Powell/Peralta Barbee board from time to time.
In 1982, I helped build a ramp in my neighborhood. As was typically required, all the wood was mostly stolen. I was not the coordinator. I know one source for wood was a new bridge being build. Wood for the jobsite was dropped into the river the bridge went over. About a mile down river, closer to our house, we fished out the wood and more incocently brought the stuff home.
The ramp was 16ft wide with 8ft of flat. The drop in deck was 8ft off the ground and the other side had an extra 4 feet of vert.
Just watched Hosoi's documentary, all I can say is.......wow!! That was when it was real!
watching some Almost videos now. I also forgot how technical Koston and Reynolds are!

just found my VHS of that couple weeks ago while cleaning up my old shop.. wasn't it Tony hawk and Mike McGill? we use to watch that over and over during hte summer.
Not sure about who all was in it, but for sure Tony Hawk.
EDIT: From wiki, tons of people.
The Skating Technical Advisor for the film was original Z-Boy, Stacy Peralta. Among the endless list of famous skateboarders who appear in the film as Stunt Skaters include Mike McGill, "Gator" Mark Rogowski, Rodney Mullen, Rich Dunlop, Eric Dressen, Lance Mountain, Mike Vallely, Chris Black, Ted Ehr, Natas Kaupas, Chris Borst, and Steve Saiz. Tony Hawk (Buddy), and Tommy Guerrero (Sam) then members of the Bones Brigade appear in the film as members of Brian's skate crew. Future lead singer of The Aquabats and creator of Yo Gabba Gabba!, Christian Jacobs also appears in the film as Gremic.
the earliest H-Street vids were crucial, Matt Hensley!
check out Shackle Me Not (1988) & Hokus Pokus (1989)

same here but all wood was pilfered. Dead Kennedy's "fresh fruit for rotting vegetables" was the soundtrack for that project, though my tape got killed by a sudden rain storm mid construction.
I still have an old Per freestyle deck with the little Indys, I used to practice my flatland trickery in the house(my dad loved that) during bad weather.
I'm itchin' to go 5-0 a ledge now...
Do it!I'm itchin to just to do tricks, I forgot how hard tricks are I can go to primo and try to flip it but no luck so far.
I'm relearning the ollie, can't seem to get rolling ones down that good.....
:32 to :35 always cracks me up, it is so me lol
