So, as the title states, I have a super rusty almost dead (because it hasn't been crushed yet) Quantum Syncro Wagen. There are pictures of it that I'll link in an old for sale thread when I'm not posting from a phone. This car had a family of mice living in it, so the harness is now shot, which leads me to my question... should I swap the drivetrain to an Audi turbo 5 cyl set-up, or maybe go RWD with an American V8? or just send it to the crusher and use the estimated $4000 it would take to do that and build some other rat, like a V8 Miata that would weigh significantly less and be more of a proper sports car?

If you scrap it pull the rear suspension. Unless it's completely falling apart people will want the a-arms, the subframe part that holds the diff, and the brakes for mk2 syncro conversions.

If you scrap it PM me first. It's probably in nicer shape than my 356k mile QSW and there's various trim pieces and such that I need. Do not destroy any glass especially the tailgate glass. It's amazing what's NLA for these cars, it's like VW doesn't want to admit making them.

There are quite a few QSWs in Ohio and I think all of them are either turbocharged or getting turbocharged in the near future. Including mine, although I'd like to hit 400k first.

I thought this would be about a gearbox where the synchros are so worn that sometimes it doesn't feel like it has any the 3rd gear on my C52 has a quantum synchro now.

He has probably the largest collection of QSWs anywhere.

The rear in my car came from him in a roundabout way.

Wait... you can do a Quantum swap into a MKII?

Now I want to see if it is possible to do an AWD MKIII on the cheap.

Kinda, yeah. You need about another $2k in parts though, and it involves cutting out and replacing the center tunnel and rear floor pan (I think the floor pan is NLA now, but you used to be able to get them from the dealer, and the tunnel is the one thats in a corrado). Then, you need the syncro transmission, driveshaft, rear diff, complete rear suspension, etc. The rear control arms are the same as the QSW ones, and the rear subframe is kinda the same (but the brackets to hold the diff are different), and I think the hubs and brakes are close enough to work. I know someone who has been working on a tdi syncro MK2 and after quite a few years and thousands of dollars its getting close to being done.

Well, here is another question, does anyone know how light QSWs can be made? I have seen online the curb weight listed as around 3000 lbs. I imagine losing door panels, excess door metal, rear seats, rear panels, and swapping front seats to something lighter is worth around 100 lbs, sound deadening is probably worth 25, roof rack rails would be about 15, but I think to build a proper light car it has to be at most 2500...

Thoughts?
