I met up with my 25 year old stepson for Easter dinner yesterday and discovered he just bought a 2004 328 CI with 73,000 miles on it for $13,500 off a used car lot.
In the last few years, he’s managed to total two of his friend’s cars, my dad’s 944, and by all rights, he should have taken out my wife’s old Civic on three separate occasions but you know, it’s a Honda.
To his credit, he’s very bright and self reliant (he managed to replace a warped head on said Civic armed only with basic tools and some YouTube videos) but I’m still waiting for him to grow up. He pissed away a college scholarship partying, has never saved a dime, and he generally seems oblivious to the concept of consequences.
So what do you think, am I just jealous or was this a dumb move???

It was a dumb move and you're mad that the world has not yet delivered unto him the smackdown he so richly deserves. Get used to it - people get away with stupid life choices all the time.

And some get away with them forever.
Take solace in the fact that at 25 years old he is not your responsibility and don;t lend him your cars.

Do you mean 330Ci? Or 325? The difference determines whether he overpaid by ~3 grand or ~4 grand.
I like E46s OK, but the only non-Ms worth that kind of money would be a mint, low mileage 330 ZHP, or an even cleaner, even lower mileage MT or SMG 325xi touring.

It definitely wasn’t a 330 so it must have been a 325.
I didn’t look at the car very closely but a quick pass did reveal a scuffed up front left bumper so we’re clearly not talking about a “mint” specimen.

When I hear about average quality used cars selling for well over book prices, I always wonder how on earth the buyers got a loan for it. Then I remember that they're probably buying it from a pay here lot, so they're actually paying another 20-30% for that car compared to a guy who gets a loan at a sensible rate from a credit union. And that's only if they act against the lot's wishes and actually pay it off instead of paying for a few years then getting it repo'd like the dealer is hoping.
Ask him if you can buy the hulk for parts when he's "done" with it.

Sounds like (me minus the scholarship) at 25, hell until 28 really. I haven't grown up but learned the consequences part.
To a small degree, I do think you are jealous. Maybe not of the car, but of the idea that he is acting like a kid and to a degree getting away with it.
Granted, I never totalled a car that wasn't mine but I never understood the impedous to "grow up."
Why? Growing up sounds pretty depressing to me.
Sounds like he has something of a job, which means he probably pays taxes and is certainly contributing something to society, lots of folks aren't
Man, to be honest, I could use a dose of what he has. I take way too much way too seriously. He'll outlive you and me, and I don't mean just 'cause he's younger.
Never see Abe Vigoda sweat, do ya?

This. Caution and responsibility aren't good for you, they're good for society, but not you. Being a reckless asshat is good for you (but bad for society). The connections a party animal gains are worth at least as much as any degree, and he's less likely to come out of college with a nasty case of depression. Sad but true facts.
