I used "gearbox" for a standard and "transmission" for either standard or auto.

I'm not tired of hearing the use of tranny to mean transmssion. I'm tired of the alternate lifestyle folks co-opting all the previously defined terms for their own benefit.

Make up new words, don't screw up perfectly good words and abbreviations that already had a use.

I actually didn't like "tranny" as an abbreviation for transmission before I had ever thought of the whole transvestite/trans-gender connection. I just think it sounds stupid, much like the dizzy/distributor think. I also get annoyed by the engine/motor thing. I guess I'm just easily annoyed.

Gearbox is for british cars. Transmission is for Japanese and domestic cars.

The engine/motor thing used to drive me nuts, now I'm OK with it.

I drive a motorcar, not an enginecar.

I've never heard of an enginecycle.

Hybrids have an engine and a motor.

"Tranny" doesn't bug me in the least.

What does are the pedantic shiny happy people that think they're superior because they think that it's an "motor" not an "engine", or vice-versa. Guess what? It's BOTH.

Call me a shiny happy then cause to me an engine burns a fuel and a motor uses electricity. I won't try to argue with the dictionary, but I will still insist on my way even if it is wrong.

There is no standard that they have to adhere to. Much like the interwebs.

But where did you get that idea, and why would you fly in the face of convention? Motorcar, motorcycle, motorcoach, motoring, motor vehicles, Benz Patent Motorwagen, Bayeriche Motoren Werkes, etc...

I dunno. Seems a rather silly thing to hold tightly to.

As an owner of an 86 911 Carrera, I can't stand P-car.

These guys must think you have to pull the 'tranny' to get at the 'dizzy' of their P-car.

We had someone disciplined at work for this not long ago. A call came out over the radio saying someone Blew a tranny on Christopher St. Someone replied that that would be the place to do it, which ofcouse offended millions of people who may or maynot be listening to our walkie talkies.

Lets not forget about the 03-04 mustang cobra owners, with their "termis", or the other cobra guys who run centrifugal style blowers "centis".

Definitely sets off the annoying meter when some mouth-breathing wanabe thug is flexing his internet muscles telling you about his "termi"...

'Tranny' doesn't bug me. 'Trans' does though. It takes zero additional effort to say the entire word. Also, the use of 'autotragic' 'round these parts sets my hair on edge. Just saying.

What really bugs me is using 'rims' instead of 'wheels.' Wheels have rims. So do coffee cups, cereal bowls, swimming pools, and meteor craters. The only time you replace the rims on your car is if you have multi-piece wheels and you're keeping the center section.
