There is only one in GA (south) but a couple in Panama City that I listen to down there. I LOVE how it sounds (in old cars with old radios especially), it's a different, warm, and nostalgic tone, i don't know I can't explain it. Anybody know more about the format or good stations around you?
You can get the same effect by compressing your MP3s down to about 32kbps and then killing the treble.
32Mbps? Wow that's better than CD quality!

Durp. I messed up, thanks for the catch.
AM is being killed off by the radio companies. Really, all talk is. Internet is taking over. Just watch...

Well Im one of those weirdos that listens to music on AM as well. Less mainstream music, more classics, in AM stereo it sounds pretty good.
AM stereo? WTF? Just because of this thread, I tuned my car radio to AM and hit "scan". I was able to tune exactly ONE station which was broadcasting the Rush Limbaugh show. Not exactly music to most ears.
Frankly, I was a tad surprised. We are a metro area of well over a million souls, with local stations for the four major TV networks plus PBS and an independent or two. Ten years ago, there were several local AM stations, plus a dozen or so you could tune up and down the dial. Now there appears to be one.

There aren't that many AM stations Listed in VA. (List does show AM and FM stations.)
I think we have more than twice as many AM stations just in the Raleigh area, although I admit I haven't listened to see how many I can pick up.
We still have several AM stations around my way...eastern PA. 1060AM is Philly's all news station. Since I never have time to watch the local news on TV, I like to listen to it on my ride to work so I can catch up. I live on the very outskirts of the broadcast range...I'm 60 miles from the city. So I need a car with a good AM antenna to pick it up really well. I've had a few cars with a weak AM signal and it drove me nuts not being able to listen. There's also an AM station based in Allentown, 1440AM, that broadcasts the NASCAR races on the weekend. I know it'll all likely go away soon, but I admit I like that nostalgic sound. I grew up listening to it. When I was a kid, the big sports radio station was on AM radio, and I listened alot.
On my way home from work, I usually use my SiriusXM radio. I have a feeling that'll go away before long too...with Pandora, iHeart radio, etc....

I grew up in northwest Jersey, and everybody listened to 77 WABC out of NYC. My parents never started a day without listening to 710 WOR. The other biggie was 66 WNBC. The only time we'd listen to FM was when Dad cranked up the big Sears console stereo and listened to Christmas music. Yessir, AM radio used to be big!
You guys do know there is a difference between AM stations and AM Stereo though right? We still have AM stations around here but I want AM STEREO.

And AM stereo sounds really good. It's rare to find the stations and rare to find them playing anything good but when you do its great.
Example, my 63 Continental with its Motorola radio, listening to oldies in AM stereo just stuck with me so much that I am looking for more formats to listen to if I can. Sadly its nearly extinct.
One of the stations I listen to regularly just switched from FM to AM.

Yeah, we know!
I was just saying how hard it is to find AM radio stations. Never mind AM STEREO radio stations.
I like the weirdo lunatic fringe you find on AM. Zoe Hieronimus and the like. Where you learn aliens are real, and they've taken over the government and such.
Far better than shortwave, where the really crazy frothers reside.

In reply to 1988RedT2:
I grew up 25 miles north of Philadelphia (live 10 miles away from where I grew up) and I could pick up 77 WABC from my parents semi clear. I have also picked up 1010 WINS on a few occasions in my car.
In reply to Klayfish:
I have picked up 1060 KYW all the way up in Scranton/Wilkes Barre before. 1440AM would be WNPV and I think it is based in the Lansdale area.
IIRC, you could take TWO AM radios on the same station, tune one slightly high and the other slightly low and get the stereo effect.
