New Yorker article about regular people who were robbed with no recourse and it's perfectly legal.
These are all regular people who were basically shaken down for whatever they had. And it isn't even unusual. Scary.

I always pictured the day I finally got to live in a Banana Republic I would be the guy riding around in the jeep with the machine guns, not the one getting fleeced by the govt. And I thought it would be more tropical paradise and less stale urine scented.

I am a clean cut and law abiding citizen, and definitely not a smuggler, but I feel a strong urge to keep a laminated copy of the bill of rights with me at all times these days.
I have no empathy for drug smugglers, I don't care if LEOs confiscate their money, but its easy to see this practice leading to outright corruption in no time flat.
