2007:

1800 miles. The normally reliable tow vehicle turned its fan clutch to glass. A replacement was procured in Dove Creek, Colorado, pop. 176 (and a head of cattle), but our jury-rig was working well so it wasn't installed immediately. Said jury rig later unwravelled and snipped a transmission cooler line, causing a nontrivial engine fire. The only system that proved irreparably damaged from the fire? The air conditioning. In a black truck. In New Mexico. In July. Meh.

2008:

920 miles. No tow vehicle. Actually, this one wasn't nearly as disastrous as it could have been. Aside from a brief panic that turned out to be a loose battery terminal (d'oh!), the car ran perfectly well the whole way. On two cylinders. After I disconnected two injectors and a faulty coil pack.

Oh yeah, and I found out later that the insurance I thought I had on the trip wasn't actually valid.

Holy crap! I think I'm overdue for another one.
