I mourn his passing, but admire the man for living his life the way he wanted, not being afraid to be wrong, his work during WWII and genuinely, for keeping it all together until he reached 92. We should all be half as lucky.
He lived a long and worthwhile life, and did it on his own terms. I remember one quote, where said if they don't like me they can fire me, I have enough food.
Listening to grumpy old men that I wasn't related to complain aggravated me, but like Mental, I had to respect the man for who he was.
As more and more of the old guard dies off, new voices will take their place. In another 50 years, some real change might be possible.
He lived in Rennsealearville, a small town near Albany, NY. I remember a story about him and Morley Safer (sp?) both owning Lambos and blistering down country roads in the area between here and Connecticut.
Who'd a guessed?
It's sad, but the guy certainly lived a great life as a writer.
On a side note, he died of complications of an unreleased surgery. I can't believe how many 90 year olds go through unnecessary surgeries. I have had many under my care go through surgeries, including open heart, and results are not so great on average.
