Sorry to hear that. Good luck with your job hunt... and with selling the house.

Angry, good luck with the move. You will be just that much closer to the Hong garages.

Housing in the Simpsonville/Greenville area is as bad as in Mi....meaning it's a buyers market there. Mrs. Mini and I are looking to that area also. There are a ton of foreclosures and bargains galore. They let developers overbuild and now they're stuck with a lot of empty houses in empty neighborhoods. Work is so-so, depending on what you do. BMW just had massive layoffs and Cat may be following soon, but there are jobs to be had.

So sorry bud. Great attitude though, and that obviously goes a long way. The selfish bastard in me is happy you'll be closer. Kisses.

I don't know about Greenville, your just down the road from a giant butt on a stick. They can paint it however they want, it's still a gigantic butt. Good luck. We went a few years ago and loved.

True. but we are in the lowcountry and the positions I know about are more junior development roles...

I think angry would not like troubleshooting product issues on an assembly line much.

I got laid off from a 25 yr. job in June. Best thing that ever happened to me, except my wife and daughter. Found a job I absolutely love and the money isn't bad either.

i'm totally looking forward to being closer to Hong Norrth. and without need for a good car heater, i'll definitely build another corvair once i'm in SC.

for those who are local, my wife's cousins live on Piney Mountain. it's beautiful, there's excellent mountain biking nearby (Paris Mtn State Park), and Greenville is a very clean city. it looks like an excellent place to raise the family.

thanks for all the good wishes. i'm ready for the challenges we're facing, and my wife is over her initial worry and is 100% on board for this new chapter in our lives.

i thought the BMW layoffs were just in germany? i know the plant is now under construction and the vehicle production volume is going from 160k to 240k over the next three years.

P, you'll be fine; great attitude, marketable skills. You aways have a family and your wife is 100% with you. Actually I'm almost jealous, love the Greenville area, always up for new challenges and I really want to downsize my house.

Please keep me posted. Oh yeah, when you roll that snowblower off the U-Haul expect questions.

Good luck. It's nice to have someone with contacts for rust free cars BTW.

And with the 46% drop out rate at Greenville high schools there's plenty of opportunities for any kid who can graduate...

If you need anything when you get down here let me know, 20 minutes from downtown G-ville and have most everything you could need in the shop. Haven't worked on a Corvair in a while, but they're not rocket science.

the 2007 data is for 16 high schools in the Greenville school district. below i've summarized the number of schools in each graduation percentile:

40-49% -- 1

50-59% -- 3

60-69% -- 3

70-79% -- 6

80-89% -- 1 (Riverside High)

90-99% -- 1 (Greenville Technical Charter)

no ranking shown -- 1

i didn't dig any deeper, but this is for public school heathens. my kids will be in private schools because we're education snobs.

Piney Mt is a high rent district, but not as high as Paris Mt.

The layoff at BMW (I think about 400) were not BMW employees, but the MAU contract employees. Seems that's the way they do it now. I suspect they will be called back when the new plant opens up.

I also suspect if you are an electrical technician guru, instead of looking for a production job, you will be fine.

You don't really need private schools in Greenville, unless you are a real snob. That said, Greenville is one big school district with the related problems. All the schools are relatively new. A lot of the teachers and administrators that live in Greenville come to work in Spartanburg County, which has 7 smaller districts. We (Spart) have talked about consolidating some of the districts, but you would not believe the bitching.

We still need heaters in cars here.

Actually, after accepting the position, I realized I might not be up to the challenge.

Waaay too much estrogen (and momma bears) in the average home school association.

It was a VERY challenging 2 years.

I attended SC public education until the 10th grade. You can make your own judgements....

Perhaps private school would be best.

I had to adjust to the ways of down south a while ago.. like.. road signs... They may be there they may not.

As a hint, my wife teaches in private schools in charleston SC. Do not for 1 second believe that because it says private on the door it is better than the public system. There are better and there are worse. Do your homework.

^^ Exactly. The more rural and inner city public schools do worse than the suburban schools. We did some digging a while back because we have considered a move (with the economy, that's probably not going to happen real quick). Some of the small town schools do pretty well too, Tigerville in particular has a highly rated middle and high school but the elementary is not too sporty.

how does jinxing work? i mean, i want to tell y'all what i've been working on lately (in very general terms since the patent hasn't been awarded yet), but i don't want to jinx it. in the worst case, i'll have my name on a patent and one more line on my resume. in the best case, i'll be towing my Challenge / Lemons / UTCC cars with a much nicer rig!

Welcome to the south Angry. I see you're moving one state down from me. SC is like our slightly less-cool brother Living down here makes you soft when it comes to cold weather, so keep that heater. Cool selection of rust-free cars and room to stretch. Lots of good driving roads and a bunch of gearheads down in the southeast. You won't regret it. Not to make it a public vs private schooling deathmatch here, but I'd vote for public school. The people in private schools don't do any less drugs or start any more crap than those in public school, they just tend to be richer. Learning to be around a more different bunch of people is the most valuable thing they'll learn.
