As a middle-aged dude, it's odd, but I like me some anime from time to time. I think Cowboy Bebop got me started. Trigun was awesome. So I dug into some others. Of course, Initial D, and I love it. I'm watching one called "Darker than Black" right now. Kinda good so far. I watched a bunch of Desert Punk and liked it a lot more than it seems likes I should have, considering I'm not a 13 year old boy.
So, any good recommendations of for kinda action like anime that's available on Netflix? They seem to have a lot.

High School of the Dead. Only 12 episodes of it ever got made, but it's amazing.
I don't know if its on Netflix, but check out "Black Lagoon." It's like a Hollywood summer blockbuster action film spread out over 24 episodes, and it is awesome..
If you're looking for an equally violent but more horror-themed series, try "Hellsing."
Hellsing is AWESOME!!
The anime selection on Netflix is meh to ok . . .
- Needless is an over the top, beat em up
- Canaan is a cool open ended shooter
- Soul Eater is your common "place kids in adult situation" anime
I just started Gunslinger Girl and Darker than Black. Both seem good thus far.
Also check out:
- Samurai 7
- Golgo 13 (not much on story, but good none the less)
- Trinity Blood
- Blood +
- Gungrave
There are more on Netflix. . . . But'll haveto check my queue.
GTO the Movie is on netflix, but I wish the show was as well.
I have no idea what netflix has available, but my suggestions...
Black Lagoon, Riding Bean, Gunsmithcats, You're Under Arrest, and Ex-Driver.
Cars, guns, and a few laughs
Watch FLCL if you can. Then tell me whats going on.
In reply to Appleseed:
I've watched it a number of times . . . And still makes no sense. And I'm good with that!
In reply to Appleseed:
Which part? I have no problems following along with that one. There are even handy cut scenes to tell you what's going on. I think the first one is like 5 minutes into the first episode, lol.
And hot girl on a Vespa.

+1 to this. Only 6 episodes, you'll get through it quick. It takes longer to listen to all of the soundtracks.
The cool thing about FLCL is there is a lot stuff going on in the background that you should pay attention to that helps develop the story.
Don't know if they have the classics on netflix but, akira, fist of the north star, vampire hunter D. Dragonball, Z, GT, etc been a fan of that series since some friends brought videotapes home from okinawa in the early 90's.

FLCL is frickin' awesome. There are some hints to what is going on, but I wouldn't really try too hard either.
Netflix has a few of the Ghost in the Shell sort-of miniseries like Standalone Complex plus others I can't remember at the moment. Definitely not kids stuff. The plot lines border on over-complexity at times, but I love 'em anyway. Says the Masamune Shirow fanboi.
edit - S.A.C. 2nd Gig was another run of the show.

Speaking of, if you haven't seen the original movie it's well worth it. Not sure if they have it on streaming or not though.

Baccano, Gad Guard and that's all I can remember right now.
Most of the ones I watched have been mentioned already and I'm drawing a blank on the others.
Forgot about poltergeist report, and the resulting yuyuhakasho series from it. Or maybe it was the other way around, the series will give you more background than the movie.
I concur on Baccano. It is so out of the norm that it is solid. It still has a lot of standard Anime points but the setting and style is unique and I like that. There are a lot of solid options out there.
Check out Samurai Champloo. This is one of my favorites. It combines Edo period Samurai with a modern day urban feel.
Here are some good websites that you can stream off of.
http://www.crunchyroll.com/videos/anime
http://www.funimation.com/
These are both pay sites that give away a lot of streaming video.
Another nod to Samurai Champloo - can't believe I forgot about that one. Good stuff.
Heheheh, Ranma 1/2 man this thread brings back some memories.
Also anything by Miyazaki. Also, any Lupin III movie.
This seems to be the current lineup.

Champloo/FMA. High School of the Dead is seriously cool--but has serious fanservice ("..no, really honey! I'm watching it for the story.."). Gunslinger Girl is pretty good, but a lot of people don't like how it ends.
Keep an eye out for Rurouni Kenshin, they've got the DVD so it should show up on streaming eventually. Long story short, skilled assassin during the wars that ended the shogunate period wanders the country after the war (but not the hate) is over, trying to gain redemption for his crimes by helping people.
Ep.1 in English (just in case, not trying to start the sub/dub wars over here ):
