Ok so it is my girlfriend and mine's five year anniversary on Thursday and we won't be able to be together for it since we got to college 3 and half hours apart. I had the idea of taking a trip to somewhere over either our winter or spring break. It needs to be within easy driving distance of Huntsville. I am not sure where and Nashville is out. Any ideas of cool cities to see.

While you're on that trip, may I suggest getting married? Jesus, E36 M3 or get off the pot man!

Lolz. I want to be able to afford a nice ring though and we both want to finish college before we jump off that bridge.

You might even want to take a break and play the field a bit post-college lest you have a complete life crisis around age 30 because you never "spread you wings/sowed your oats". You do a TON of growing/maturing between 22 and 28--true story.
Just a piece of advice from someone whose circle of friends/acquaintances/relatives his age is WELL over the 50% divorce rate...

Don't "afford a nice ring". Mine was in the 2K range. It was awesome and seriously one of the nicest rings I looked at. If you overspend on a ring you're just wasting money. You can haggle with those guys, too.
I have nothing to add to the actual question.

Chattanooga is about the only big thing in between.
Barber Motorsports Park is right there. I'm sure some club has an HPDE going on that you can get in on. Nothing says I love love you like letting her beat the E36 M3 out of your car for a whole weekend.

I have been with my SO for 7 years without a ring. I am hoping to change that early next year.
we have lots of debt to pay off before getting the ring.

I mean I couldn't even swing a $200 ring right now.

Ok, I think I got something for you. May I suggest a visit to here?
I've never been myself and will more than likely never go there. It is in between KY and Huntsville. Not sure what there is to do there, but based on the name it sounds like it could be fun.
Probally not what you are looking for as far as an anniversary.
Dude, I have a $$$$ ring from my wife's first marriage sitting in a drawer. Depreciation on engagements rings is 99.9999999% as soon as you leave the store. Buy used and you'll save a ton!
What does a ring have to do with anything? If the ring really matters then the marriage doesn't

Why do cars matter?
To a girl, the ring may mean everything. It may not.
Don't listen to the guy who suggested an "open" relationship, I'm sorry but that is plain retarded. If you like someone, you like someone, you don't have to go "test the waters" elsewhere to realize what you have.
Anyways, congrats on having a relationship for 5+ years and for thinking about things the smart way. Money is one of the number one factors in ending relationships!
I was thinking within a 6 hour drive or so. I like the idea of the Smokies.

Very over-run with tourists in the summer. I've not been in the off season.

Mrs. 914 said "Nah, it'll be in soapy water and scooping baby E36 M3, take me to dinner and call it even".
That was >30 years ago.

Be careful if you plan a visit during "leaf season" - unless you like perpetual traffic jams.
GSMNP is THE most-visited national park in the system.

Less crowded than the Smokies.
take her to five guys for burgers ,buy her a five pak of smirnoffs , get her five candy bars /chocolates ,five things for school binders /pens/post its, give her 5 piks of yourself,5 candles,5 rolls of toilet paper ect
If she likes outdoors kind of things, hit a mountain lake, get a cabin and spend the time together hiking, fishing, etc.
This is an odd idea, but if there are any Folk Schools in your area, you can take a class together.
