So I wake up to 16 degrees F. and the prospect of another snowfall, which will surely keep the kids home from school for the rest of the month. Argh.

That's why "climate change" is a better name...it's not getting hotter everywhere, just on average. Some people were getting false hopes

FYI: Its Climate change, not just global warming. When its a hundred degrees for 2 weeks this summer remember to complain then too.

BTW, Anchorage Alaska has had temperatures in the 40's this winter.

Who or where is the official document that records what the average temperature of the earth is, and how is it determined?

No.... it's still global warming. They just changed the "standard" name to Climate Change because most people (which is obviously true) could not relate to how an average increase in global temperature would do anything but make everything hotter all the time.

More heat = more energy. More energy = more "weather". The specifics of the theory predict More Extreme weather. That is, if it's cold, it's colder, if it's warm, warmer, dry, dryer etc.

The current somewhat extreme weather would be an example of that. I would of course NOT suggest that it would be in anyway proof of it actually happening (my opinion). If it is a consistent trend over a large number of years, then maybe you start to consider it.

BTW - I hate to "flounder up" the topic, but the whole "it's cold, ha, global warming" thing is getting a bit old. It really just makes the person saying that look a bit ignorant of the subject.

The climate continues to change. The only that that would be odd is if it STOPPED changing.

Yes, the only consistent thing about weather is change.

That's why it's pretty silly to make any conclusions either way based on short term evidence (I am confident climatologist would agree)

I see it as them joking about it, not making a realistic claim.

A realistic claim would be "Climate change, how multiple generations of people managed to get paid for watching what has happened since the dawn of time"

That's weird, it was rather mild this past summer here in good old Hotlanta. May have to change that to Warmlanta.

Climate change... the change that keeps on changing.

I could use some warmth at least for a day or 2 to thaw the ice out of the wheel wells on SWMBO's car... It sounds like driving in a ice grinder when turning... Alas, at 3 degrees, that's not likely to happen today.

According to this, the temp as gone down in the last 10 years. We already know that global warming and cooling happen, as glaciers once covered much of North America. What I find interesting is that in the entire history of the world, we have little more than 100 years of data, and the accuracy of a certain portion of the early data has to be questionable. This just confirms what I've thought all along, and that is that while we should carefully monitor the climate, make logical conclusions from trends if possible, and act methodically on those conclusions, a "the sky is falling" reaction on either side is foolish. There just isn't enough reliable data to consider this an urgent situation, much less panic.

Does it? I think it makes the person that screamed that the sky was falling, or in this case, the earth was melting, look stupid.

Yay! This one again. "It's cold where I'm at, right now, so climate change doesn't exist"

In SoCal we have had record high temps for months and in the largest drought ever recorded. So using the same logic, that means that climate change is not only real, it's happening at 10X the rate. So we'll all be fried in 10 years.

Again, I'll just go ahead and blindly follow the 97% of scientists (people that know these things) and accept it as fact.

We have way more than 100 years of data - what we only have 100 years of is direct human measurements. Ice cores and dendrochronology (studying dead trees) are some of the ways to get data going back hundreds or thousands of years.

The "pause" in global warming is really only a pause in atmospheric warming - to massively simplify the issue, the oceans are absorbing the heat, which is actually worse.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/news/recent-pause-in-warming

I'm taking the Max Planck attitude to the "debate" but while it's not going to kill us all soon, I'd say it's definitely urgent.

In reply to GameboyRMH:

The question isn't whether or not climate change is real, it's how much effect, if any, are human's having on it, and I've not seen any evidence thus far that is convincing enough to be considered absolute. Because of that, I don't see it as urgent at all. Its something we should continue to monitor and take action when and if that action can be proven to have a positive effect. Too often these kinds of things are rushed through, costing billions of dollars, and then found late to have been a mistake. I don't subscribe to that way of doing things.

Well, bad news, there's no "absolute certainty" in science. Just the best we know. We're still not 100% sure how gravity works.

I just wonder why most of you people that are so convinced that man is killing the earth post jokes and cartoons instead of intelligent and factual statements that support your viewpoint.
I'm open to the idea that man has had a negative effect on climate, but have yet to find anyone on that side of the debate that can do anything but say that anyone that doesn't believe them is an idiot. That's not how you convince people to think your way.
