I also run Crank Bros pedals on everything. My team has a grassroots sponsorship with them, but I was using them for years prior to that. My long road loop has a couple of pedestrian bridge crossings that require walking and the Speedplay cleats got to me. Plus, I seem to be the only person in the world that hated the engagement. Egg Beaters and Candy's are much easier.

Try the any of the shimano shoes with the performance tour last (It is a 3E). http://www.shimano-lifestylegear.com/us/fw/technologies/more_lasts.php I normally wear a 4E also and had the same problem. I ended up with the SH-CT40 (the new model is the SH-CT41) in one size bigger than my normal shoes but they have worked well for me even on 50 mile rides. The CT70/CT80 shoes did not have enough give where I needed it.

Definitely get clipless pedals. I love mine, and run either these or the double-sided SPD pedals on everything.
