I recently parted ways with my beloved Sea Sprite 23 after she tried to part ways with the bloody great lump of lead bolted to her keel. Too many structural problems for me to repair, It was a sad day I took my sawzall to her.
Today I drove up to Babylon NY (Hi Wally!) and picked up this nice little boat. A 1986 Montgomery 17. These boats are ocean going for their size and displacement, we several making long distance blue water voyages. One sailed from California to Hawaii, another from NC to California via the Panama Canal, and a third made it from California to NZ on it's way to Africa before the owner bailed on that voyage.
She came with 2 year old sails, a trailer that has never been dunked, and a nice little honda outboard. She needs a few little issues cleaned up, but I expected that for a 34 year old boat. I got her for the not shabby price of $6000

That is a good looking rig.

Wow, you had a lot of work in that sea sprite, shame it was bad enough that cutting it up was the best choice.

Old quote from elsewhere: "90% of 'sailing' is working on your boat."
I'm not familiar with the M17 but I did find this ad w/ pictures for a sister ship. My first thought was if the Honda Motor is a 4 stroke you pretty much bought an engine and got a boat for free. Well, at least half of the boat price. A 9.9hp, long shaft retails about $3k. Come to think of it, your probably more like a 4-5.5hp but still near $2k for a long shaft.

Weren't you planning on looking at a boat in Florida? Did you ever see it?
Congratulations on your new boat. I'm not familiar with them, being more fishing oriented in my boat interests. They sound like amazing boats.

I was, but after seeing one more local to me, I realized it was not the boat for me.
Nice score. I've seen them go for $7500 with crap sails.
Fiberglass will treat you well.
All I've got to add is one has made it from Portownsend WA to Ketchikan, AK twice... without a motor...

hopefully yours turns out as rugged and salty.

That's nuts! I didn't know that existed.
I've wanted to do this one: https://www.theadventurists.com/adventures/rickshaw-run/
Timely. Today on Vs Day, one of my sailboat racing buddies sent this via text.
Been there, done that...

R2AK is a bit too much for me. The Watertribe's "everglades challenge" and "blackbeards challenge" are more my style and perfect for my GP-14 Sailing Dinghy. Not so good for the M-17
I've read the accounts of Everglades challenge. Sounds tough as heck and super fun, but way beyond my level of commitment!
well, she is home. Left at 8am and got back at 4:30. 335 miles there and back. Only trouble I had was a cop who did not want me dragging the boat and trailer down the Southern State Parkway, so I got kicked off to find my way back to the narrows on route 27 and then home.

If she sails half as well as she tows, this will be a sweet boat. I just cannot do a thing for the next two weeks as the DMV and all other "non-essential" state offices are closed until May 30
