Alright, before we end the thread I recommend checking into some of these options.
Cheaper is a term that is self defined but typically comes in two basic flavors.
1. I use it very little and want to spend little.
2. I use it a lot and want to spend less.

For #1, look into the growing world of prepaid cell phones.
Boost Mobile: 10 cents per minute
Trac Phone or Net 10
T-Mobile prepaid
Virgin Mobile
Other smaller regional offers.

For #2 also prepaid:
Boost Mobile: $50 unlimited, talk, text, data
Straight Talk: (only available at Wal-Mart) $45 unlimited talk, text, data
Page Plus: $40 unlimited talk and text, limited data included
AT&T: $60 unlimited talk and text, data costs extra
Small regional companies like Cricket and Metro PCS.

All of these programs have some trade-offs but for basic phone capabilities they should all meet most peoples needs. Be sure to consult the coverage maps of each to see how well they serve your individual needs.

Most of these offers listed above can me bought at Best Buy, Radio Shack, Target, Wal-Mart as well as at local retailers.

You will also find that the handsets sold with these type services often begin with a simple (traditional) type cell phone (with actual number keys.) for roughly $30-$50.

Hey now, I'm just about the opposite of a "luddite" but carbs are FAR easier to do roadside repairs on. With a carb you can always rig something up and sputter your way home, no scan tools or spare parts necessary. There are ups and downs to both carbs and EFI.

A generational thing? I'm 31 and I don't really use my cell phone for anything but calls. So I use a cheap Virgin Mobile prepaid phone. It does have a camera, but I just use it to make phone calls, and it's a lot cheaper at that than many phones out there.

The iPhones are kind of interesting but seem more like a tiny computer thing that happens to be able to make phone calls than a phone to me. On the other hand, two months of service on an iPhone at the cheapest rate would be more than what I pay for a whole year of service on a prepaid phone.

My basic Verizon service is enough to get me by.

I would like an iPhone or Brownberry but I can not justify the service rate increase.

I want my cell phone to be like a handheld computer (and I want to be able to install anything I want, so iPhones are right out). I have a Treo 650 right now (old, but the only thing that really feels like it's missing is WiFi).

My next phone will be this:

Although giving Nokia and Microsoft some of my money in the same year is probably going to cause some vomiting...

That actually has more computing power than the PC I am working on right now.

guess it might be a generational thing as posted earlier ... all I want is a phone that will allow me to place a call... receive calls if I'm expecting them.... otherwise it stays turned off.... upsets some people but I really don't like / want to be constantly available to any and every one

I can tell you guys are scared of automotive carbs.

If you weren't, you know that you CHANGE jets, not adjust them (unless you own a Stromberg).

You'll get really freaked out when I tell you about emulsion tubes, air correctors and -gasp- metering rods!

Especially with the introduction of Facebook and Twitter, your friends and family never leave the room. That's a bit too much for me; I got rid of my accounts a while back.

+eleventybillion the 1963 Lotus 25 that Jim Clark raced in has more modern technology in it than a modern COT does, apart from maybe the brakes and the ignition box, and probably the on-the-fly adjustable brake balance that the COT has (never examined a vintage F1 car before, so I don't know that one for certain)

As far as the original question. I don't think having a plain phone means that you are afraid of technology. I just want to have a phone, so that's all I am going to pay for. And if the pay phones weren't out for three days after 9/11 I would probably still use them instead of carrying one all the time, but the missus wants me to be able to call and tell her I'm ok should it happen again in the future.

It's not a plain phone I'm talking about, it's the jitterbug in particular.

LOL.

I was ready to kill the AT&T cell phone I had last week. All I wanted to do was make a call. It's busy taking pictures and going into setup screens and everything else it can do EXCEPT letting me make a call.

I dearly love neato gadgets and things, but not when they are impossible to use.

When it's all said and done, I'm running around with an ancient Nokia phone because it works. Because it's rock solid reliable. Because it holds a charge for over a week. Because you can hear it, and they can hear you. No nifty features (besides the silly flashlight). It's a phone. A phone that works. I like that.

I've never understood this sentiment at all.

I have my cell phone on me at ALL TIMES, we don't have a landline at the house.

You know what I do if I don't want to be available? I don't answer the phone.

It's a pretty simple concept really.

Whoa! Thats berkeleying awesome. Do they put it in tanks beforehand or squeeze it right out of their cute, innocent, unsuspecting little carcasses and into the car right there on course so its fresh?

you are correct ... it is a simple concept... when I don't want to be available I turn it off.... I don't use voice mail.... I don't text ... I don't take and send pictures... I use the phone to call when I need to, and leave it on only when I know there are going to be incoming calls that I want to take

of course I do have a land line... and have managed to master the art of reading the caller id.....
