Welp. That's my dream right there.  I'm really happy for you.

when the wife and I lived in Charleston all of our vacations by ourselves were to western NC.   I'd move there tomorrow if I could.  You are spot on about the weather.   You can get some snow and there are a few ski hills around but it didn't usually stay for long at lower elevations.

I know this is an unpopular perspective, but another  possible consideration is weather changes related to global warming.

This is related to why I brought up water earlier.

Over the summer Phoenix announced it would limit construction on new subdivisions because of the ongoing drought. At least Arizona is putting the brakes on Saudi alfalfa farms. In the last couple of weeks the Mississippi River was in danger of salt water flowing upstream into some of NOLA's drinking water due to this summer's more recent drought.

"We" in this case is more than just the wife and I. It also includes my siblings. We all went in together for this property as a retirement/vacation place for everyone. We get along very well and with 62 acres everyone can kind of do their own thing.

My thing is an RV pad near the stream to spend summers after retirement. We put two of the pads in this summer with 50 amp services, water, and sewer. There is still some landscaping to do but they are usable now. I'm sitting in the motorhome as I write this. We are up here for a week enjoying the cool autumn temps and the changing leaves.

It really is a beautiful section of the country.

Saw your gun hobby note... today my next door neighbor informed me that he now has over 250 guns.  The lady across the road is 102 years old; she only has about 100.

Based on this map, I was going to recommend the tri-city area of Kingston, Johnson City, Bristol, TN.   This is all the very eastern edge of TN or about 7:00 in the red circle below.  All that blue area in eastern TN.

Where Toyman suggested falls in that red circle also, at about 6:00 in the NC portion.

I moved from just outside Columbia, SC to around the 3:00 position of the red circle on the map above last year and it has been nice. Mainly from a weather perspective. The heat & humidity were starting to get to me after 25 years. Rare for temps to get into the mid 90's here this summer and the humidity was at least 20% lower compared to Columbia. One of my friends in Columbia sent me a picture of his outdoor thermometer (in the shade) reading 104 or higher 4 or 5 times this past summer. It's a little cooler here in VA in the winter, but not significantly. Historically there is supposedly about a foot of snowfall in the winter, but we only had one dusting last winter that wasn't enough to cover the streets.

The biggest issue I see is housing costs are elevated due to a lack of available housing.

I would avoid Tennessee if you're looking for a place to not be around people.  Everyone and their grandma wants to move to Tennessee.  A lot of the smaller cities mentioned in this thread are also experiencing rapid growth.

We have family in TN - they encourage us to come on down.  Easier on taxes compared to Illinois.

Guns are kind of like cars... once the fleet reaches a certain size you spend more time 'maintaining the fleet' than you do enjoying them.

I once bought a gun from a S&W collector, and asked if he had another model I had been looking for.  He had to get out his laptop and look at a spreadsheet to answer.  I think he was past that point...

I haven't reached that point... yet... LOL.

Wife told me to keep it under a dozen. So I'm trying. I consolidated calibers years ago to make it a little easier to feed them. SO now it's just .45acp, .22, 5.56 and 12ga. .... and my single 38spl that was a gift for my 21st bday. OK maybe I haven't consolidated as much as I thought.

sounds like what I like.

ReconWife and I plan on moving to Gooding in the next five years or so; the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind is located there. She intends to teach there, and it's not so far that I cannot commute to Twin Falls for work.

I have a strict rule of no consolidating guns, when money becomes gun money it can never become not gun money. Example if I get a gun im not a fan of, it just gets traded or sold to fund buying a gun i do like. The only reason we reload is to feed some of the uncommon calibers we have.

I go by the same rule, and it's a good one.  Though it did eventually result in buying a second safe... cheeky

I agree, at a certain point it's not fun anymore
