I can tell the HTPC is in need of a wipe and fresh install of Windows 7, the current HDD has given us problems before, so I'd like to go ahead and upgrade it.

It will only need to hold the Windows 7 OS and few other programs, possibly games. So I don't need a monster one.

This is a pretty good deal.

Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - $99.

This one may be even better...a Samsung drive for the same price.

SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - I'm using this one for a Win7 install. I have 30GB free space left with a good amt of games installed. Games are the storage hogs.

Amazon prices are about the same if you're a Prime member.

Interesting. I don't really have any games installed now.......but there are a few that may come out here and there I would want to install.

Don't happen to remember how much space Win7 takes up, do you? I can't remember off the top of my head.

I think if you watch the Newegg Deal of the Day stuff on the SSD's you can find some great deals. I believe they had some ~200gb Toshiba stuff a few days ago for about $150. While they aren't the fastest drive out there, you don't need the fastest drive out there for an HTPC, and it'll still be great vs. an old HD.

Win7 probably fits in 30gb with all updates applied.

Sorry. I don't keep track of that stuff. I just set a budget and buy the biggest, fastest SSD I can. I figure it will get full eventually anyway so why not buy the biggest I can afford? I just keep all the junk and what not on a secondary drive so as to not fill the primary (SSD) drive. Then, if I have to reinstall, I can leave my data drive alone and reinstall over the primary.

Any real life expectancy data on SSD's? Other than speed, why go there?

SSDs are great for speed but in terms of reliability, are super-dangerous. They can fail irrecoverably without warning, treat each SSD like a RAID0 array - backup early and often.

I have had two fail on my test machines in this fashion. In my very limited test world environment, they failed more often than hard disks.

Because race computer.

I already have a 1TB to back up any important info on.

Well, excuse me! Carry on then.

SSD's can't be beat for speed. Install something you can stand to lose, like the operating system, and keep your data on the secondary drive that will be a standard drive.

This way you gain the speed of an operating system working on an SSD and the reliability of storing your personal data on a standard magnetic media drive. If the SSD fails then you'll just rebuild the box.

^Yep, I went ahead and ordered the Samsung you posted a little big ago.

Once I get my AiM Solo and Go Pro this winter, I'll see if my computer has the guts to combine the data fast enough to keep me from building a new box next year.

Video processing speed has more to do with CPU (and maybe GPU) power than storage speed. Storage speed is important too, but not nearly as much.

I know, it was ancillary to the current question.

I chose that one too. I can reboot a machine in under 15 seconds if it has that hard drive installed and Win7. I own only laptops and I didn't back to back test battery time comparisons between the magnetic drive and then SSD. I do know that with gaming it does make a difference.

Also, Samsung has a program that will optimize the drive and your pc settings for use with the drive once it's installed. I used that and it worked very well.

Have fun! Let us know how it works out for you.
