For on-skin use, check out the active Picaridin (also listed as Icaridin.) It tests with slightly better repellency than DEET and it's less harsh on synthetics and plastics. You want a spray that's at least 20%. I've found it to be more effective for me than Deep Woods Off, and it doesn't strip the paint off my bikes.
