any experience with Peace Corps

ok, you guy's seem to know a little bit about everything, my daughter wants to leave her Graduate Assistant (History) gig and join the Peace Corps. Anybody have any experience with anything like this? We have been to a PC orientation and that did not dissuade her. Her mom and I would rather she stayed in her program, but she knows more about wants she wants to do with her life than we do.........i would like her to be happy and safe, she is 22 and has lived on her own for a couple of years. The PC says most likley she will be sent to Soviet Georgia.

Make it well known that she won't be supported financially by you guys......that might be enough.

Everyone I know who has done Peace Corp, and I know a few, get the whole "live in a developing country" thing out of their system.

For women, it is incredibly important to learn how to protect oneself, realize bad situations, and understand that even the seemingly best intentioned young man who wants to invite you over to learn some extra English may not have the best intentions.

Honestly, I would take Soviet Georgia over a lot of other places. We're on pretty good terms with both the Georgian and Russian public, and Georgia isn't so desolate that you would be without internet.

Another advantage? Blending in. When your white, blonde, blue eye daughter goes to central Africa, she sticks out like a sore thumb. In Georgia she'll be able to blend in, which is a big safety advantage. Even if your daughter was black, she'd still do better in Eastern Europe than light complexion in Africa or Asia.

friend from university went into the peace corps. she quit it early after one of the girls she knew got raped and the people running the show basically ignored it, and wouldn't do anything to increase security for them. YMMV.

My cousin dropped out of law school to join the Peace Corp. They sent her to Guiana where she got knocked up by a local. She married the guy and brought him back to the states with her. About six months later, he got deported for committing a series of rapes in her neighborhood.

yes, that was our first response, she thinks she has enough saved and will not need our help again...LOL

yep, blonde her, blue eyes, 99lbs, and we thought the same as you, and no muslim type places (not that there is anything wrong with that)
