My wife loves to text me. She does all the time. It sounds weird to me but my work phone has unlimited data but a 200 text limit. My old boss would just ignore the fact that I was always going over on texts. I don't want to take the chance that the new boss will look the other way.

So what is the absolute cheapest way to get unlimited texts? I would be OK with it if all it did was text but I'm not sure such a beast exists.

.... Unlimited texts is FAR cheaper than unlimited data. If I were you, I'd talk to the boss and see if texting can be added at your own cost (should be like 10 bucks a month). If don't have a personal phone- find a dumbphone you can t-9 with and do that. It's been a LONG time since I haven't had unlimited everything that isn't talking (I hate talking)... back when I started unlimited data WAS texting.

If you have unlimited data, I would download whatsapp and use that to text ... As long as you have free data or use wifi, you are set

There's Viber as well which will do texts and calls over VOIP and it is free.

Well I think I have unlimited data. I run pandora a lot and nobody has said anything to me about it yet. My old boss would never tell me exactly what my plan was, only that I want over on texts again. This is the first smart phone I've had so I'm still learning my way around all this technology. I'll check out the apps. BTW it's a windows phone if that matters.

Text limits are odd in this day and age. Are you with a major carrier or a regional player like Bluegrass Cellular?
You may want to look into updating your plan. It may be very possible to "update the plan" without incurring additional cost.

Verizon. I thought it was weird too, last month he said I cost him $8. I'll talk to the new boss about it.

Verizon sounds about right for that kind of stupidity.

get the cheapest prepaid phone you can get and the cheapest plan you can get.. i had unlimited texts and however many minutes i wanted to pay for for years on my T Mobile prepaid plan. i didn't use very many of the call minutes, so i was only adding a $50 card about every 6 months or so. i think the prepaid cards expire after a year, so maybe for a $10 card a year you could do text only...

Since you have a windows smart phone, can your wife contact you another way that is still typing?
How about Facebook messages sent from her phone to yours?
There are other apps to do written communication. One is Viber as mentioned above. Instagram, Snapchat, etc.

Google Voice will give you another phone number which can be sent text messages.

All the above will bill as data and not bill as texts.

I highly suspect you can get email (both work address and personal address) onto your phone. Can you wife just write you a personal email?

+1 on google voice, I use it all the time.

Google Hangouts is another option if she is on a android phone, Hangouts can also send messages from a computer desktop (via Chrome extention)

We've tried to do it with emails but inevitably she always migrates back to texting, it's just easier for her I guess.

This. Most of my Android-using friends and I use Hangouts exclusively.
