We bought our house in '06 and never had a land-line phone. We do make sure we have the cell phones charged and at easy access at night in case of emergency though. 6 years later I have never wished I did have one.
I do still have a land-line for standalone DSL access. No phone service though. It was the cheapest way I could get the internets (like ~$35/mo. after taxes/BS), and we don't have cable/satellite/etc. to piggyback off of.
We have a landline and 2 cell phones. Our cellphone is a very cheap 450 minute, no data or voicemail plan we have had for years. I use the cell for all my calls and the wife only uses hers in emergencies.
She talks to her 3 sisters every day and would quickly use up all of our cell phone minutes. the landline has an answering machine on it so that is the number we give to the plumber, etc.
If we were to drop the landline we would have to upgrade the cell plan which would cost us more than we are paying for both now. So we will keep the landline.
