Why is Thomas a Tank Engine? I know he doesn't have a turret and gun (duh) but seriously, what is a tank engine? If I am going to have to watch this show 14 times a day, I'd like to know more.
And why does Emily have such big wheels?

Thomas the Tank Engine creeps me out, man. Weird faces slapped on the front of vehicles... no thanks. Cars did it right.
Thomas is a modern classic. The stories are great for kids. Well, great if you don't want to raise another Miley berkeleying Cyrus.
My kids have pretty much outgrown Thomas, but I almost miss those days. We've got the books, the videos, the little wooden trains, and the memories and photographs from having attended the "Day out with Thomas" event twice. Or was it three times? Once at Tweetsie in Boone, NC, and once in Strasburg, PA. Might have been twice at Strasburg. Both were great events, but the experience at Strasburg is exceptional.

It's an engine that carries its water supply in side or top mounted storage tanks, as well as its own fuel supply. The other option would be to pull them around in a more or less permanently coupled tender. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of these layouts end up being plot points.
The original books sometimes had downright obsessive levels of detail about railroad operation, which shows up in the earlier episodes. The later stuff, after the Awdreys were not in the picture, not so much.
My son just received his first Thomas trains for his 2nd birthday from his aunt. I dislike the CURRENT Thomas show- but back in the day, it took place in this cool old train station with super sweet vintage games and Mr. Conductor was Ringo Starr.

I had every single Thomas train from the original series as a kid. Same with all of the 20 odd page books. Classic world for kids to grow up with rather than bullE36 M3 like adventuretime.

Before it was Ringo, (or was it after?) it was George Carlin. Both were really good in the roll.
My kids have now outgrown the Thomas age…thankfully. I agree that Thomas is wholesome, has good story lines, etc…but the whole thing was just really creepy. My wife and I felt the same way about Barney. Great story lines for young children, but just weird. We steered them away from those shows…the Wiggles too…and towards things like Sesame Street or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

Yeah, my aunt bought all the old stuff on eBay for him. Heavy diecast trains and whatnot. Really nice stuff. I don't really support character merchandise (the wife and I got in it when she wanted to buy him a Mater to go with the Lightning McQueen he got for his birthday) but this seems like quality, and he's never seen the show so he doesn't know who they are- mostly because Mr. Conductor doesn't really exist anymore, and the new show is garbage.

Carlin was after. Ringo was the first one. I was at the VERY tail end of the age range when the show first premiered- hence my memory of the old station.
I watched Shining Time Station on PBS when I was a kid. I always enjoyed Thomas. It's a great show for kids. I don't like the CGI show that they now have. I liked it when they were actual model trains.
You want creepy.. TecTractor is creepy. My MIL got my daughter started on that show.. The tractor talks to animals and can hear peoples thoughts.. It's British though so it's really only slightly unexpected levels of strange
