Just curious what the experience is like. BIL is having trouble landing a job. Wondering if it pays enough to cover running costs and leave a little left. I've got an extra car sitting.

I use Uber somewhat regularly (don't drink and drive kids), most of the ones I've used are doing it as a 2nd job to supplement income vs being their only source. Most of them have said on busy evenings it still only works out to $13-15/hr.
And then of course you're dealing with loud drunks all night.
I drive for Uber in Austin, they were doing a push for drivers so my 01 'Rolla qualified. While most times I do it I make $13-15/hr, they run guarantees for weekend nights that are $30-40/hr if you're willing to deal with drunkies.
In reply to thedanimal:
is the 13-15/hr after expenses or before? If before, that seems more like minimum wage rates.
Well, compared to making zero and hearing him whining about it, I can at least offer BIL a means to make something. For that matter, could probably fund a challenge car for working a few weekends - or sell the w211 and invest in building my consulting bus.
In reply to oldtin: That's pre-tax but after Uber takes their cut. Granted I drive very rarely and when I do it's for a few hours at a time, I'd imagine that if I put more effort into it and did it on a more regular basis at peak times I'd do much better. I plan on doing it full time next week. I have an overlap between when I start my new job so I have a paid week off so figure I'll try it out full time.
My dad does it as a side hustle (he lives in Greensboro, NC). It's enough that he's driving his Prius for free and is getting a couple hundred dollars of extra cash flow a month, but it's definitely not a living for him.
That said, I have heard of people using their Uber gig to network their way into better things, so it may be worth doing just to find and open a door your BIL might not have known was there otherwise.
It just got legalized in St. Louis, and I talked to some drivers about it. This is for UberX (regular cars), not Uber Black (limos).
You're an independent contractor and file a 1099 for taxes. Keep all your gas receipts and use it as a tax write off, so expenses should be minimal. When working weekend nights, you will get close to $30/hr as you go from customer to customer. People aren't too rowdy as the passengers get rated by drivers too; if a passenger's rating goes down due to a bad review, their fare increases. Everybody, drivers and passengers try to keep that 5 star rating as it benefits both parties.
I was drunk in these conversations, but I believe it is accurate.
