Tried to buy a quart of tractor paint and 1 spray can last night. Had to show my ID to prove I was over 18 (which somehow makes me less likely to huff?). The cashier said that it was the quart of tractor paint (oil based) that actually prompted her to ask for my ID, and not the aerosol. I can't recall this ever happening before, and I know I've bought paint in the last few months. Im curious how widespread this may be. Specific to a certain retailer? Regional thing? Nationwide law that I'm not aware of? So, has anyone else had to show ID when buying paint?

I have only had to show ID when buying spray paint, that does seem odd.

I've only had to do it when buying spray paint, BUT kids can buy canned whipped cream, which uses nitrous as a propellant.

I think it is required in CA, but the stores I go to just enter a dummy date in the register (they may be profiling me).  I even have a Lowe's near by that has "freedom paint" (spray cans are not in jail and you don't need a "jailor" to free what you want to by), but others do lock em up.

I was recently asked my birth date when buying $4.99 worth of 134a (freon)

I haven't actually had to show my ID, but I see "Age Verified" pop up on the register all the time, so I assume they are just looking at me and going "berk, he's old"

Last time I was actually asked was about two years ago.  I just kind of stared in disbelief at the young man behind the register.  He shrugged and said that he has to ask and he has to get a yes or no before he can continue.

You can't buy spray paint at Home Depot's self checkout! It waits for the cashier to verify your age before proceeding. Been that way for years.

ISTR That I got carded or at least asked my birthdate when I picked up the paint for the BRZ recently.

I'm pretty sure I don't pass for under 18 anymore...

Spray paint, every time I buy it from Walmart. But I haven't bought any canned paint so no data there.

Just did yesterday getting some plasti-dip. I live in meth country so i'm not too surprised, but... if you're trying to snort plasti-dip, an ID check is not gonna stop anything.

Spray paint or carb cleaner from Walmart. Although the number of times I've been carded has pretty much dropped to zero after I grew my goatee out. I guess they see the grey/white facial hair and determine that I'm not 18 anymore.

Spray paint, expanding foam, and super glue have all had me carded in the last couple months.

Yep.  Show ID, 2 quart limit and you have toe say "Yes, I am painting steel doors with this paint".  It's not like I'm stealing cold capsules .....

My dad got carded in a Meijer in Evansville, Indiana, while buying a bottle of wine and a bunch of fried chicken. With his wife. And his kids, aged 15, 18, and 20. He just slowly points at his hair, which while not quite white, had definitely moved past grey and well into silver at that point.

I remember getting carded at about 15 years old for some spray deodorant. You could smell  me from about 10 feet away, hence the purchase. Couldn't buy it. Went back and got some roll on deodorant. Pissed me off at the time.

White Rain hair spray I thought was the good stuff.  We also had a bunch of white trash sniffing glue in the theater when I worked in there in the late 60s.  We got the clean up the fricking paper bags.

I think it's actually a federal law that you have to be 18.

Where I live (and the fact that my beard is gray) they rarely do it.

I used to work at Home Depot at the Pro Desk which meant I had to be cashier trained.  If one of my pro customers bought anything like spray paint, it asked for a birthdate.  99.99993% of the time I ignored it and put my own birthday in.  It was quicker and easier than asking the 60 year old contractor who just spent $14,000 for his ID because one of the 215 sku's on his order was for a can of inverted marking paint.

I used to chuckle at the youngster cashiers with their summer jobs asking a guy in a wheelchair with a Vietnam Veteran hat for their ID to buy some Krylon.  Read the room, people.

Aside from buying bullets, I can't remember the last time I was carded. I'm pretty boring though and usually if I'm buying anything, that thing was meant specifically to be consumed by children. Pizza, nuggets, freezer burritos....

I think what happens some times is a store has been cited for not carding someone who's under age, so then they have to swing 180 degrees and card everyone regardless of their age.  I've been carded before and am obviously in my 60s; I just shrug, show them my ID, and carry on with my day.

Along the topic of huffing, I noticed a Free ad on my local Nextdoor page last week where someone was giving away an open case of Whip-It nitrous oxide whipped cream charging canisters they had found in their alley.  I wondered if they had any idea what kids use it for.
