Wrong kind of pipe.
I've always wanted to try a pipe as well, just because it seems like such an activity automatically imbibes a sense of calm, whereas cig smokers (myself included) are fidgety bastards.

I think it's the ritual of the thing that brings the sense of calm.
Packing, lighting, tamping, re-lighting, making sure you don't smoke too fast or too slow.
If I don't take my time and slow down, I don't enjoy it.

I did cigars for a few years, but when the money ran out for good ones in college I went to pipes. I enjoy both the flavor aspect and relaxation that comes with smoking a pipe. As others have said, try a few and don't spend a ton until you find something you like. My favorite one comes from a trip to Germany. Smokes great and I was even complimented on it by an officer of the law as a party was being disbanded.
Almost everyone loves a pipe smoker, even when they would shoo a cigar/cig smoker away. I have been meaning to try some good cigars again, but enjoy the fact that I can smoke a pipe for just a few mins or half an hour and not worry about finishing the whole thing.
Damn, there are so many pipes to choose from! lol what are some good companies? what about good leaf companies?
25 years ago, I smoked a pipe. I should say I stopped 25 years ago. The best smoking pipe I had was a Calabash. The classic "Sherlock Holmes" type.
this is what I used to smoke .... they didn't cost that much 35 years ago....

Someone check the temperature in hell, Hess and I agree on something. I love my calabash. You'd need a hookah to get a mellower smoke. Only issue is, they're a bit more hassle to transport.
For those wondering, they look giant, but they actually have a very small bowl, just the white part at the top. The body is actually a calabash gourd (traditionally, but they're mostly wood bodies now). it's completely hollow which really cools and mellows the smoke.

OH NOO'S!!! They've actually screwed up the Calabash now!!! We're Doomed. Doomed, I tell you.
I want to try Hookah sooooo bad!! I keep hearing about it, my mum and sister and all them go to the bars but I never went.
I was actually looking at some Calabashes. How's good ol Captian Black tobaccy?
Cap'n Black is good stuff. Black Cavendish and vanilla.
Uh, don't smoke. Bad for you. Cancer. Metastatic tumors to the brain are No Phun for anyone. Losing your mouth, larynx, etc. is no phun for anyone, but I'm not sure about some of those ENT guys.

They're still hollow, and I hear they smoke much the same.
Problem was, the poor African craftsman who used to painstakingly grew the gourds into just the right shape realized they could earn a lot more money doing other things that took less time and effort.

It's funny how when a person is 16, they just don't connect those dots.
I think all schools should have a bunch of old smoker ladies with manly voices, come in & tell kids how cool it is & that they should start smoking. I think kids would think twice about starting.
