I have an 80s vintage soundcraft series 200. 16 channels. It powers up and the XLR inputs all pass sound but I don't know much about its condition. That is to say, I just powered it up and plugged a mic into each XLR and got sound out the other end.

I'm trying to sell it, but I'm seeing prices range anywhere from $200 to $4000 on the intarwebs. Can anyone help me value it?

It's really a shame but that older gear, even in good condition is just not worth that much. That's probably a $500 board if everything is working and you might need to sit on it for a bit to get that for it.

I was shocked at some of the prices. It seems like vintage sound equipment can really bring good money. People keep talking about its "warm sound" and "soft highs".

I'm young, but to me that sounds like "I want my equipment's shortcomings to make decisions for me."

But hey, if someone wants to pay big bucks, I'll take it.

Some but not all, vintage equipment has a nice tone that's difficult to achieve with digital gear. In the studio I would occasionally drag out an old Yamaha board just because the pre-amps have a nice warm tone that I like but there's now a pair of single channel tube amps in the rack that do the same thing, are more reliable and are heck of a lot more convenient. Besides, you can get close enough for digital distribution with digital tweaking in post now.

In reply to curtis73:

Most of the desired vintage consoles were high-end recording console, that typically have a pedigree/history. If I owned your Soundcraft and someone offered me anything over $200 for it I'd be laughing all the way to the bank.

The problem is for (well)under a grand you can find a more compact 16-channel board with automation and a blue tooth interface. Very few people want something like your Soundcraft(or my mint-condition Peavey, for that matter) unless it's a young/cheap/broke musician.

10 years ago, when I worked in a city-owned facility, we threw 2 200-series consoles in the dumpster. The city couldn't even find a school that would accept them for free.

And that was 10 years ago. If somebody offers you $200 for this, try to talk them down to $100!

Haaa! Ok, good information all the way around. Thank you.

Sounds like I offer it for $100 and take $75.
