Here's a picture of my Grandfather and his sister taken in the 40s while he was on leave from the Army. I've been up and down Superior Ave on Google Maps and can't find this street corner. Anyone recognize the names, building, etc? I see Cleveland Railways Building, Hotel Erie, and a sign for a roller derby. I'm pretty sure the photo was taken in Cleveland, though it could be Columbus. I found Superior Ave in Cleveland so I looked there until I remembered that GRM is the grassroots Google... or something like that.

Identify the church. Roller derbies rarely outlast churches.

I'm up by the lakeshore every weekend this month. I could spend some time out there, also, if you'd like.
I can not take credit for this but I asked a guy I know that lives there and here is what he said:
"Corner of East 9th and Superior, the Church in the background is The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, saintjohncathedral.com "
He works just down the street from the church.

But that church looks different... at least from google street view.
The one sign says "Cleveland railway", so I'm thinking it's probably Cleveland. Another sign says "Press". There used to be a paper called "The Cleveland Press" that was in business from the late 1800's until 1982. That may be the sign for it, but I"m not sure. I tried to find out all the locations for that paper but was unsuccessful. If you can find that out it might lead you to what that road is.
This is saint John's in Cleveland:

I looked at that particular church for a while and the construction is similar, but not the same. A little more google found a picture taken by a guy inside the "oreo building" and the caption says he's looking out the window at the Cleveland Railway Building.

Edit: the Brave One beat me by a couple of minutes. We were typing at the same time.
The Cathedral of St John the Evangelist
Located at the corner of E. 9th and Superior.
Wiki Says said:
In 1943, Archbishop Joseph Schrembs announced a plan to renovate the Cathderal, but due to World War II the plan did not move forward until 1945. After World War II, Schremb's successor, Edward Francis Hoban continued Schrembs' plan. Construction began in 1946 when the old cathedral was enlarged and the brick exterior refaced in orange Tennessee Crabtree limestone, in an ashlar pattern. The architectural firm of Stickle, Kelly and Stickle oversaw construction which also included a new bell tower and interior decoration.
The hard part is that the church does not look the same today as it did Pre-WW2
My thoughts were...
The car in the picture is not parked on Superior but it is still parked on a big street. For this North/South street to be a big street, it pretty much has to be in the central downtown district.
The only church I could find that bordered Superior in the central downtown is this one but it looked slightly different. That lead me to Wiki. I was looking for history of a fire or reconstruction.

This should take you to Google Street View

DAMN! Missed it by that much.
I think this is correct:
"Corner of East 9th and Superior, the Church in the background is The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist"
I found this postcard, note statue to the right of the building.

and this, note Hotel Erie sign to the left
Side note, you can just make out Hotel Olmstead on the left margin. If you zoom in on the Roller Derby sign, you can see the word "Olmstead"
did this help the OP any?
I'm going to try you guys out in Melbourne ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/wink-18.png)
