I was thinking today about how nice it would be just to start over on my car choices.  Like you cars are gone and you get the cash value they are worth, car loan is gone, etc.

I don't want to try that now because I hate trying to sell cars.  I think I would go from my 20 Veloster N and 99 Land cruiser to a gen 1 awd CRV and a rallycross car of some sort with 0 debt.

Yes.  But I also hate selling cars which is why I'm just dealing with what I've got for now.

I'm also considering doing this with my house.

No, I'm good!

To expand a little....

Or, as I so often tell my children:  "Count your blessings."

But, but, but...

I've got the GRM package!

Miata. WRX wagon. Mazda 5. GMT 400. And, another station wagon, an 04 Ralliart. Everything is old, but no payments.

when I feel the urge to make a change, I follow that urge.  Life's too short not to.  My cars are cheap enough to not be financed, however.

Yeah, I am getting there.

Going to go off fishing this summer and see if I feel any different.

Nope. I fall in love with what I have. Even E36 M3 boxes I should have booted long ago.  I'm the owner cars dream of having.

Joel The Pimp and I have talked about this time and again. I continue to remind him that it's an option but starting over ends up looking like what I've done for theast 16 years... Not worth the hassle.

I think about it daily. Problem is, there is no acceptable solution for a replacement currently available to me.

Right now I am really leaning towards dumping the N.

at that point I need to replace it with something cause driving my land cruiser 80 miles a day(normal non covid commute) and its 12-14mpg would be the same as a loan on a new prius. Im leaning toward a sub $10k avalon, camry, prius.

I will be up to 3 vehicles anyway since I will pick up a rallycross vehicle but getting rid of the N lets me get the rallycross car sooner.

But the depreciation hit is a bit much right now.

I need to see if my raise comes through in July like its supposed to and the hazard pay from having to come into the office.

Nah. I'd eventually just end up buying more of the same E36 M3 I already have.

Getting rid of the Yaris wouldn't really phase me. I like it, but its just basic transportation and I haven't had it long enough to really get attached to it. I do think about selling the Miata off, just because I've pretty much modified every nut and bolt and there isn't much left to do with it, plus it's gotten a little too extreme and has given me some troubles on the last few long roadtrips I took it on. But I'm so far into that thing financially that I'd get slaughtered on trying to sell it.

Wife and I have had the conversation. Instead I just need to fix things that I have.

I do exactly that from time to time, though I usually keep one daily like my Colorado, and one race bike. I'll slowly accumulate different stuff, then repeat the procedure. It keeps things interesting. We recently had a crazy run on bike prices so I sold almost everything, and made enough to buy a bike I've always wanted. I just have to wait til I can find one.

Selling off all that stuff reminded me just how much I enjoy flipping bikes and cars and told Mrs. P that I now know exactly what I'm going to do when I retire

What is this?  We got a 5% pay cut for our hazard pay to come into the office.

we get time and a half for when we have to go into the office since we are an essential govt agency. But i can only go into the office with prior approval. so it isnt much its like 4 hours a week.

Every 6 months or so I go through a phase where I want to get rid of the MS3 and the Vibe to replace them with.... berkeley if I know, probably something electric. I just want one less car to serve as the year round transportation, but I wouldn't mind watching it become slowly destroyed by winter, but I also want it to be as fun to drive as the MS3.

The problem is that there doesn't seem to be anything currently available to buy that would replace the MS3 as it currently sits. If the car were stock a Golf R would probably scratch the itch, but it isn't and it's going to be hard to replicate it without also modifying whatever replaces it.

Plus I don't want a car payment.

The van is on the chopping block. Our Honda Fit was purchased new, and we will keep it until the wheels fall off - which will be a long time, if things keep going the way they have been. I periodically think about selling the Miata and replacing it with something fun with a back seat, so I can take both kids to cars and coffee.

But, I have way too strong of an emotional attachment to that car. My wife and I bought it sight unseen ~7 states away, drove it 3500 miles, and spent 2 weeks in it during a time that we couldn't afford a more extravagant vacation. Pretty soon afterword, our first son arrived, and now it's part of the family.

All six vehicles have some kind of... Reason... for their continued positions in the collection. Oddly, I think The Modern DD and The Truck are the earliest likely to be replaced, but I don't think it's exactly imminent for any of them.

My biggest frustration is that without wanting to buy a fresh set of RE71Rs for the Mini, I've got nothing ready to autocross/track day. That just makes me feel like I'm doing it wrong. But I'm also really only a front-end rebuild from an (underpowered) event of some kind in the MGB, so I need to keep getting my other chores out of the way and make that happen.

Or maybe get back to having a motorcycle. I feel like my motorcyclelessness is an unfortunate and temporary condition.

Sure, if I could get back all the money I've paid for my stuff, I'd do it right now, get rid of all of it and start over collecting it all again, because the 'hunt' is half the fun.

But fact is buying stuff is very easy, selling stuff is very hard.  Unless you essentially give it away.  For this reason I limit myself to buying stuff cheap, therefore the losses are minimized.

At least once a day.  I sometimes think I should just buy something reliable and fast enough that I don't need to work on it much, so I don't have to have as many tools and spare parts in the garage for all the project cars.

Fiesta St is about as good as it gets in the fwd hatch market, maybe if you found a super clean r53 Cooper s that's already had all the fail beaten out of it. But I can't get rid of my ms3 for similar reasons.

I've got a queue of projects, several stalled for one reason or another.

I really didn't expect to dislike the XJ Cherokee as much as I do, I should sell it, but I need to fix some stuff on it to be able to get a reasonable amount for it.  Will I sell it?  I'd say it's 60/40 that we suck it up and keep it.

Needed a truck, thought a beater would be fine, casual conversation with a friend led to the purchase of a Cummins W250, I needed a truck, not a project.  What did I buy, yep a project.

Jewels did some rough math on what we have into the W250 at this point, just parts, my labor is free, we could have bought a much nicer, much newer truck.  Probably not a Cummins, but still a nicer mid '00s 3/4ton gas burner, and not have to work on it.

I've been going to build a Wrangler for 15 years...

I've had a sweet '76 242 for almost 6 years, have done nothing but buy parts for it.

I'm getting depressed.

Gee, thanks MrChaos. indecision
