I knew the Maiden song, of course, but had never watched the British spy/drama/sci-fi (kinda) TV series–until recently. We’re not all the way through the series so no spoilers, please, but we are digging it. And not just because of his car.

Is this a remake of the original Prisoner, with Patrick McGoohan?

This is the original Prisoner with Patrick McGoohan with the Lotus 7 at the beginning?   ( I read the McGoohan built that car himself from a kit.)

Its a great show.  You have to pay close attention to everything that is happening because the episodes build on each other in a subtle way.

The last few go way out into 60's psychedelic.   McGoohan seems to play it with no irony.  It is what it is and you provide the introspection.

The scripts could be a Monty Python comedy if Number 6 was played by John Cleese with his sardonic wit.  (IMO)

Yes, the original.

An utterly brilliant show, one that was almost entirely McGoohan's project. After he quit Danger Man, he wanted to do something different and came up with the premise based on an episode of the earlier series. Even though The Prisoner is not a spin-off of Danger Man, there's a clear linkage. He reportedly did more than the credits suggest, using a number of pseudonyms so it didn't look like it he was doing it all.

I really need to visit Portmeirion one of these days.

I haven't seen it, though I've always heard good things. Y'all have me considering buying the Imprint blu-ray box set now.

I have, however, seen the Simpsons parody a number of times:

Trippy show but I like it a lot.

"Free for All" I like to watch during election season

"Schizoid Man" is interesting commentary on identity

In reply to 02Pilot :

It was originally written by McGoohan and another guy who wanted it to have a straight, coherent story. He left halfway and it was all McGoohan who wanted everything to be psychedelic, metaphor, and allegory. McGoohan says The Village is supposed to be a metaphorical place but one episode establishes it's off the coast of Morocco.

Here's a good interview that I think should be watched after finishing the series. "Angry rebelliousness" is how I'd describe McGoohan.

I remember watching the Prisoner  on our local PBS station , loved the MiniMoke

There was also a BBC radio series  about 10 years ago that was pretty good

Yeah, it's good, but you have to just absorb it and not overthink it.

I have the whole collection on DVD.  It gets.... odd.

The reboot is also worth watching, but is also quite odd.

There is an episode where he manages to avoid the balloons, and escapes back to London.  I forget the exact number, but there is not a single word of dialogue for about 15 minutes after the credits.

It is such a bizarre show.

We watched it back around 1967 when I was 12. Great show but nothing as good as Star Trek in 1966. smiley

I watched the original series when it was broadcast. Challenging for a  kid to try to understand. I was the age when I thought that adults understood everything.

When I was in university, one of the TV stations was showing The Prisoner episodes every week, so of course we watched it. They also had Monty Python's Flying Circus, which was very clearly from the same era in a lot of ways. If all you know is the skits, you don't know how weird the Flying Circus could be.

Fantastic show. I think I first learned of it in one of Peter Egan's stories or columns and eventually found it at some long-forgotten video rental joint. It got weird here and there. That's part of the charm to me. It's been too long since we revisited it.

I watched the series for a while on youtube when it had all of the episodes uploaded there (heck, it still might).  I need to go back and watch them again.  This thread has me feeling all nostalgic for the series.

I remember the London episode, I think.  A lady is driving his car, and he mentions that he built it himself!  I remember wondering at the time, "Does that make it a Locost?" laugh
