Thinking of getting a treadmill because I'm too much of a wimp to run in the snow/rain.
What does Consumer Reports recommend? Other input or experience? Is the $500 model at Sam's Club just a good as the $2,000 model at Dick's or wherever? What should I look for? I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, just something that will last a while and do the job.
If there is one near you with decent hours, you may want to consider joining a month-to month gym like Planet Fitness or something. It'll save room in your house, plus you get all of the other equipment as well.
I pay like $14 a month for mine, which is about three years of membership for the price of your $500 Sams treadmill. The gym is going to have the top of the line stuff, too.

A treadmill can be a fine thing to shop for via Craigslist. Many people buy the best stuff and then never use it. When you talk to them on the phone it will be pretty easy to tell if they have worn it out or never used it at all. Certainly seeing them in person will answer that question.
Non-folders: Precor 9.31, Landice L7 Cardio Trainer, True PS300, Sole S77
Folders: NordicTrac C 900, LifeSpan TR4000i, Smooth 7.35
Budget models (apparently pretty much only good for walking): ProForm Power 995, ProForm Peformance 600, Horizon T203, Sole F63, Horizon T202
The standout looks like the NordicTrac. It's the only non-budget model around $1k, and the budget models were all $800-$1k. All the others were $1600-up...
I'd take this rough info about who builds "good" stuff and shop CL for a dusty one.

I second Brett's recommendation. I used to use a cheap mill and never really realized what I was missing until I joined a gym. Precor or Life Fitness FTW. Plus you get the added benefits of the scenery if you know what I mean :)
In reply to Marty!:
The scenery. Well, yeah. The attention seeking girls are always in the front row of machines with most of the guys using the machines behind them.
On that note, off to the gym!
