In a fit of stupidity, I bought a standard skateboard last year. It was right when I was about to graduate college; perhaps I was trying to clasp onto my last threads of youth.

Yeah, except I used to spend every day of every summer and every weekend skating. Some folks never stopped. And are better for it.
I never skated at the age when it would have been appropriate. My two teen boys skate and my youngest gave me lessons. I'm terrible, tense and still wear the helmet but it's quite fun once I relax just a bit. I'm far from the cool dad, but it's a pretty fun thing to do with my boys. I know I could break a hip. I suppose I'm just working through my midlife crisis. Yeah, the longboard would be the way to go. I'm not going to be doing any tricks in my lifetime.
I asked the guy I bought the long board from to tighten up the trucks he said try it first . Jeez louise I loved the surfing feel wow felt like old times get your board out gloves elbow pads knee pads and go riding helmet for Tim and tommy

One word of advice, don't buy the cheap Amazon/Ebay boards or components, the difference between them and the good stuff is remarkable. The smoothness of my Caliber trucks is amazing compared to the cheaper stuff I have ridden, and lets face it compared to car stuff even an expensive longboard is cheap!
