So I'm gearing up for a job at Columbus Brewing Co., and I'm looking for a room to rent for a few months when I get there. I could search Craigslist, but I figure I'm more likely to find a place with folks I'll get along with better through the board here. Plan is I head out before my fiancee does, learn the area, and find permanent housing at some point before she is ready to head out.

I'd need something starting the beginning of November. Not sure exactly how long I will need it. Probably until January or February.

Don't need a lot of space. I'll be heading out with just what I can fit in the S2000. Just need a bed, preferably an internet connection and small desk, too. Anyone have an extra room available at their place or know a good buddy who might have?

Thanks in advance.

You will also need somewhere to store the rims/tires on the S2000 while your snow tires are in use.

Yeah... I've been thinking about how I'm going to deal with tires, but that will be a separate thread.

Place each tire in a garbage bag, stack them up 2 tall, put a piece of plywood over the top, put a table cloth over the plywood. Bam! you now have a nice table/desk.

In reply to Beer Baron:

Do you already have snow tires? I'm a big advocate of them in this area, but also DD'd a Solstice GXP through 2 winters here. It was a company car, so I didn't want to buy tires for it out of my own pocket, so I just drove it. I was surprised that the only time I had any trouble was getting up my drive way when it was unplowed. Those two winters were far from mild around here, and Columbus gets a lot less snow than we do up here. My point is that if you don't already have snows, don't get them unless the need arises.
BTW, I have a spare room, but unfortunately you'd have about a 120 mile commute one way to work....Then you'd need snow tires.

Like I said, the wheel/tire situation will be another thread. The car is about due for new front tires and I would like 17" wheels for summer. I am kind of thinking I could drive it cross country on what it has now, get 16" winter tires, and then pick up a set of stock 17" AP2 wheels when summer rolls back around. I also figure that if I am staying in Columbus, the city will be kept pretty well plowed, I will just want a tire with a compound that will handle cold temps.

I live north an hour but I've sent your request to some friends down that way.

I'm a bit too far north to offer anything here, but I would look for a place in German Village. Some of the districts around the CBC are "up and coming"...and can be a bit scary at times...

Pretty much anything south of I-70 is hit & miss...mostly miss. German Village is very cool. Definitely stay in the western part of Columbus. If at all possible, bring another car. The Arena District is also cool, but more than likely too expensive for a room.

I'll do some checking as well.

I could potentially bring my Astro... but that would require someplace to store my 944 or totally throw off my moving logistics.

Please rethink this...I wouldn't wish daily driving an S2K in Columbus...in Winter, on anyone. Not only for the probable salt/drifts/ice/snow plow mountains etc., but for being able to take it back home. An Astro is a perfect choice.

German Village is pretty cool. My favorite neighborhoods are Grandview and Clintonville. Victorian Villiage is nice but not many places with garages.

North of 670/70 and west of 71 is the best area.

Would anyone in the wider area be able to store a 944 for the winter? That would simplify my life immensely.

Does it need to be in covered storage? I may or may not have space in my garage for the winter depending if I sell the Mini or not.

It is a race car and has no windows, but I can just throw a tarp over it.

Good luck and glad you are headed closer. I am about 2 hrs away.
As for the cars and storage, a Mini-storage place will be less than $150 a month for a 10x20' (think 1 car garage) but also will give you a place to keep your tires, extras, off season clothing and more. Many places have cheaper outdoor storage rates too which could be good for the trailer or another car.
Measure first but you might get two small cars in a 10x30' for less than $200.

I'll 2nd the suggestion of don't DD the S2000 through winter. Especially coming from southern California, it is tough to grasp just how much salt and junk gets put down on the roads (and for how many months). It is totally worth having a beater. I always called mine the "sacrificial anode" after zincs used for marine engine protection. I had a '91 Miata and a '97 Aerostar as my OK-to-rust cars. I had to replace the exhaust and brake lines on both, and I was only there 4 years. Both also began to rust out at the sills, despite washing them every 2-3 weeks.

Just trying to save you grief further down the line . My $1200 beater Miata was worth every penny.

I'll second the notion of getting a winter beater. Not because the S2000 can't handle the conditions--it can't be any worse than a lowered Miata--but because it will get beat up. Ice falling from the truck in front of you, salt rocks kicked up from the car in front of you, the salt itself eats the car, the potholes that will come around January...

As far as the car being able to go through everything, you'd have maybe 1-3 days a year where you would have an issue. Not a big deal at all.

Just so happens that I have the quintessential winter car listed up for sale now.

I could pick you up at the Columbus Airport (or Cleveland) with it if that simplifies your travels/arrival.

That is a very nice offer. I will need to think about it. I am leaning towards just taking the Astro and getting a storage unit for all the things I haul out but don't have space for.
