Yeah, it's this again. Sweat deal on an LGB train. Pick up only. Technically it's Brooklyn Park, MN. Technically, I don't own it yet because it's an auction. Technically, if I won it, I'd need it mailed to me. Technically, this might be a damn mess, but I promised to have a train under the Christmas tree this year and this would knock it out of the park.

Technically.

Appleseed, what’s your budget? And do you need track? I may be able to help you out here in Chicagoland. Not sure if I have any track or a transformer to spare, but I may have an engine.

This is a scale model train set?  Do you need it re-sent because the seller won't ship?  I'm in Minneapolis, Brooklyn Park isn't very far away so if you win it let me know and I can help out.

Yeah, if I won, it would need to be shipped. It's probably a good 10 lbs. There would be compensation of course.

In reply to mtn :

Cheaply as possible, but I realize that G scale can be spendy. Right now all I'd like is a simple oval for under the tree. It can grow as the budget  allows.

Ultimately, once SWMBO and I get a house: garden railroad. She loves gardening, and once she saw an operating layout at an open house she was hooked.

But baby steps for now. Let me know what you find. I'd love to keep it "in the family."

Well all my LGB stuff is MINE, but I have these in the basement and wouldn’t mind getting rid of one of them. No clue on their value. I don’t think I have enough track to spare though, but I do have one (cheap) transformer I can throw in.

First up is a Bachmann. It ran the last time I set it up

Comes with the coal car. Santa Fe caboose is negotiable. I’ll get better pictures tomorrow

Next is a Kalamazoo Toy Company.

Not sure if it comes with any cars. Probably have one or two I can throw in. Again, it worked the last time I used it.

I’ll set up some track this weekend to make sure they work.

Also check out Facebook markets, there is an LGB Marshal Fields Christmas set for $265 in McHenry

Those are big trains.  smiley  I still have the train set I got for Christmas 50+ years ago but it's O scale.  I should set it up sometime and play with it again.

Now I'm thinking about how I'm going to do the tree this year... I think I want to build something like this:

Do it, mtn.

Bachmann had a realy neat set about 30 years ago. N scale 4-4-0 old time passenger set that ran on a plastic ring with tracks. You screwed it to the top foot of the tree.

Lol, with G-Scale I think it is best left on the ground.

Appleseed, how would you do something like what is pictured? I'm trying to come up with an easy, cheap way to make trestles. Maybe just 4x4's sitting on the ground, then some 1x6's on top in a giant octagon/decagon/whateveragon and lay the track on top. Unless there is an easy way to cut a ~5-7 foot donut (geez, I really need to figure out what tracks I actually have at my house--most are at my parents)

Now I  think of it, 1x6 woudl be ridiculously overbuilt. What is the thinnest 6in board you can get?

1x1 is cheap and strong enough for the uprights. . If you were ok with multiple segments of straight boards, rather than a smoothed radius in the picture, 3/4 pine cut at angles and screwed together. It wouldn't look like the picture because pine looks like ass stained, but a nice coat of paint and you're in business. Screws or bolts would make it collapsible for storage.

If you are serious, I can probably come up with more defined drawing.

I’ll send you a pm in a few minutes with video—but both engines run. I’d say both need to be oiled, and both were used by kids at some point soo there is some broken plastic bits. I bought both at estate sales or craigslist, can’t remember.

Everything pictured on the tracks would come with them, the red box car is the only one that’s is mine. These aren’t as nice as LGB, or USA trains, but they’re both nice enough.

Say $50 for the red Santa Fe set, $75 for the yellow Kalamazoo set, $30 for the track they’re on—it’s brass, but it’s not quite fitting correctly. Either come with the transformer pictures, which frankly is low powered. They could really use a larger radius as well; they bump off the track—but some of that is the poor fitting track.

Ok.  When you have things worked out with the seller, let me know where I need to go to pick it up.

I have a week to make arrangements. I'll let you know asap Stuart. I couldn't do it without your help. Thank you.

*edit* I read the fine print for local pickup. They say:

"This item is for local pickup at our Brooklyn Park, MN location, or via third-party pickup through an external shipping company (UPS store, etc.). Please contact us if you would like to have this item shipped to you, and we can put you in touch with a local shipper who can ship virtually anything. Be aware that any external shipper will assess their own fees, at their determination. "

I'll see what that's all about when I call them.

Stuart, I'd need you pick it up. The shipping company wants $22 to ship it. Not bad. But then they want $20 to package it. I'd rather pay you or 1kris06 the money.

Just let me know when you'd like to pick it up. I have to let them know a day in advance. It's been paid for. All you need to do is go get it.

Looks like the US post office ships it for about  $25 from Minnesota to Hanover Park, IL

How about Saturday?  That means I won't be able to bring it to the post office until Monday, hopefully that's okay.
