What's the best way to record something on TV these days if I don't want to pay a monthly service fee for the DVR? I don't want to stream anything or cut cable. I just want to be able to record TV shows.
Needs to work w/DirecTV.

Buy a cheap PC and a tuner card. Then download one of many free software programs.
I built my first DVR years ago, but now any off-the-shelf computer will work just fine. You'll either need an internal tuner card, or an external card that uses a USB port.
The software programs have built in guides, can search listings, schedule regular recordings, anything a commercial will do.
