So my phone's about to die, and it's becoming clear to me that I need to bite the bullet and get a smart phone.

I'm going to be at several car shows and events over spring time, and I really need a way to update/edit my blog, post live tweets, post pictures etc. I need to do this while I'm out.

I've looked around at reviews for several phones, and although an iPhone was not my first choice, it seems like it has the best multimedia and browser applications.

Does anyone own one? What do they think? What about other phones that compare?

I own one, it was a novelty at first, now I can't imagine being without it.

Never owned another smart phone for comparison though.

I've got one (two, technically, but the first one got run over by a truck).

It has one of the best browsers on a mobile device, the only one I've played with that comes reasonably close is the Google Nexus One. The Nexus One does seem to have a nicer display - well, more pixels - but the user experience on the iPhone is better. BTW, I guess you know the iPhone doesn't do Flash.

I haven't tried any blogging applications on the iPhone, but that's mainly because I don't often do really short blog posts and I find typing long posts a pain in the rear on any Smartphone (touch typists and 2-finger typing don't go well together).

The only other smartphone I owned before the iPhone was a Windows Mobile phone and the best place for that was the round filing cabinet. I would consider an Android phone as an alternative (which would also save you from the clutches of AT&T).

I already have AT&T so...

Long blog posts with two thumbs are going to be a pain in the ass on any phone. I feel they'll be slightly more of a pain in the ass with a touchscreen to contend with. However, it's looking more and more like it'll be worth the tradeoff. I was curious about the Nexus one, but it seems AT&T doesn't have any Android phones at all.

Does anyone know if you can load pictures from a camera or other USB devices into the iPhone?

I had an iPhone through my last job, and I personally own a Blackberry 8330. For my everyday needs, web surfing is the only area where the iPhone was superior. Doing any text work whatsoever - texting, blog posts, Twitter, etc - was infinitely easier on the BB than the iPhone. I just can't work with tiny touch-screen keypads.

That said, it seems there's no innovation at all happening with Blackerries these days. I'm seriously considering a Droid for my next phone.

I don't think you can load photos from an external camera or any sort of USB device on an iPhone. The built-in camera is OK - not great, but OK (that's 3GS btw, the 3G camera doesn't have video and is worse).

I thought as much. Is there a phone that does?

If I can find a Blackberry with a decent camera I may go that route. I don't need to do a lot of surfing, so I can live with poorer performance in that regard.

How hard is it to upload pictures to photobucket and places like that on an iPhone compared to a Blackberry?

Unless I overlooked something, you can only email or MMS photos off the iPhone. You can probably get them off using iTunes but that would require a computer near you.

Ugh. I really want something that can directly upload photos.

The Blackberry functions as a USB thumb drive when plugged into your computer. You can browse files just like any other USB drive, which means you can load pics and other files right onto the BB.

An aside - my car stereo has a USB port so I can plug in a thumb drive and play MP3s. Because the BB functions as a thumb drive, I can load my BB up with MP3s and play them through my car stereo and charge the BB at the same time.

I also was in this situation. I went in to get an IPhone, and ended up getting an Android. Glad I got talked into it. 5.0mp camera, faster and more powerful than the IPhone, battery is not internal (dont have to send it to get changed out, which after 2 years its going to start slowing down). Expandable to 32g via SD card, instead of having to buy the "more memory" unit for more. Can upload photos and posts and all that you need on the go (facebook, twitter...). Admittedly the app support is not as huge as the iphone, but its still young phone.

That's a big selling point.

Of course I don't think AT&T has Android phones out yet.

The Nexus One is unlocked; you can buy that directly from Google for any GSM network if you can stomach the price.

iphone has apps for uploading to photobucket both direct from photobucket and third party apps that will upload to plenty of photo sharing websites. There are multiple twitter apps that also include photo upload capability. The Facebook app works very well and allows loading to mobile album as well as posting, etc. All in all I can do just about everything I want or need on my iphone. If my stoopid IT admin would get his head out of a dark hole directly behind him and support a couple different app I could even access everything I need from work on my iphone and have the entirety of everything I need to work at my fingertips.

+1 I lovelovelove my Droid. Better camera than the iPhone (higher resolution and it has a flash), a physical keyboard, replaceable battery, upgradable storage, real GPS (based on satellites, not cell phone towers), and a better network.

The droid is better on all those accounts, except the iPhone has real GPS as well.

I've had the BB and now have the iPhone. Several friends have all the other flavors of smart phones. In head to head comparos the iPhone still comes out on top, while no phone does it all the iPhone does more and does it easier.

I don't know bout no 2 thumb texting that someone mentioned cause I never do it that way, but you can turn the phone sideways and the keyboard is bigger so there's a size for everyone. The keyboard on my BB was a pain cause it was so small.

Not supporting flash has never been an issue for me as I rarely encounter a website with flash on the iPhone. I also rarely find a website with enough Flash to impair my surfing on the puter either. I have flash disabled on Firefox to speed up the connect speed since I'm limited to DSL at home and work. The most I normally find that is flash is a small part of the window that 8 times out of 10 turns out to be some sort of ad.

Something to consider, the second gen iPhones are more susceptible to screen breakage due to the sleeker design. It's easier to drop the phone and hit an edge with glass close by. My first gen phone was dropped off a 2 story house onto concrete, went swimming in my pond about 3' deep, was slung off my car into traffic and was run over repeatedly for almost 30 minutes (once by a city bus) and came out unscathed. My 2nd gen had a drop from my hand to the driveway and cracked the screen.

My biggest gripe about the iPhone is the shape, it's too slick a surface and wants to slide out of my hand easier than other phones. While the 1st gen feels clunky by comparison it was easier to keep in my hand.

I'm told there's a 3rd gen coming in the next month or so.

Problem is, eventhough it's unlocked, it'll only work on the two GSM networks in the US, T-Mobile and AT&T, and the 3G only works on T-Mobile.

I really wish T-Mobile's coverage was better - they're the only company I know of that charges you LESS each month if you don't get a subsidized phone ($20 less per month last I checked), and they were the first to go Android. Just to have coverage where I use my phone, though, I'm stuck with either AT&T or Verizon, and of those two, AT&T seems to be the lesser of the evils.

If you have a flickr, photobucket or facebook account you can upload directly with the right app. I do it quite often.

Buy a case and that becomes less of an issue. I found one for my 3G at Ross for $5, it is made of rubber and has the imprint of a tire on the back of it. It is awesome and has protected my phone quite well.

Plus, I treat the phone like the $400 device that it is :)

Well, the OP is on AT&T, but I didn't realise that the Nexus One didn't support the 3G frequencies for both AT&T and T-Mobile. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me but then again a lot of what happens in the cellphone market doesn't.

I'm so not looking forward to that part of my move to the US. I like my iPhone and have had it for long enough to get it officially unlocked but it looks like AT&T doesn't seem to sell you iPhone SIM only contracts; T-Mobile will happily do that and seems to have a reasonable cost option but both iPhones will only work in 2G mode on T-Mob. Oh, and the wife is with Verizon but I'm not too keen on that...

I thought about getting an iPhone, but add up all the costs for a year and you can almost build a challenge car instead. I am choosing to opt out of smartphones. I just want a phone that lets me talk and text...my current phone can play MP3's and has a built in radio and a camera...it is harder and harder to find a phone that is just a phone.

My older son has an ipod touch and I agree the technology is cool. It's an iphone without the ability to call anyone as long you are in a place with an unsecured wifi connection and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg every month.
