Hi

The VR Virtual reality were the Christmas gift a few years ago but seem to have faded away ,

These are the style that you put a cell phone in ,

They were $30-$50 back then but now seem to be $5-$10 at the discount stores ,

Does anyone use them ?  Any racing apps etc that use them ? or other cool stuff

Any other hints ?

Thanks for your help

ADD:   I am using Android

I did this.

The original was Google Cardboard. Google gave the design to the world, and a number of derivatives came along. I think the top was made by ViewMaster. The platform used either a magnet and washer or a tap to the screen to allow a single switch interaction with VR.

Next gen was Google Daydream, which provided a more involved headset made of higher quality materials, alongside a controller. Daydream compatibility required certain quality assurances from the manufacturer, such as refresh rates. Lenovo released a Daydream standalone device that doesn't require a phone.

Samsung around the same time partnered with Oculus. There have been several headsets, and you need one of a specific set of Samsung phones. Again, you get a controller. The Oculus Go is a very similar standalone device.

Even the cardboard doohickeys are surprisingly good, but I'd suggest getting something plastic if you can swing it. I think it's probably a worthwhile gift, but more for an Android recipient than an iPhone user.

My kids thought they were the coolest thing in the world.

For about 39 minutes.

I got one for my s8+ for free three years ago. It's left the box twice.

We've actually used them to present 3D renderings to clients. They worked great for what they were.

it's all about the software support. If that's good, the headset will work just fine for what it costs.

since I wear reading glasses how would I focus a cell phone so close to my eyes ?

What is the best app to start with ?

Usually the headpieces are large enough to allow for glasses inside.

Software, I am less sure of.  We used an AutoDESK rendering app to render the 3D models, and then the resulting file was uploaded to a web site and accessed via your phone's browser.  That's about the limits of my experience.

I wear glasses in my Rift for simulation racing and it works quite well. most good headsets allow you to move the lens away. You lose some FOV but its not terrible. For the serious enthusiast its not hard or to expensive to have custom lenses made for the Rift/Quest or Index
