I want to build this in 1/5 scale. Already have the dog chew tires and cat dish wheel halves. Front suspension is push rod sprung mustang II based asphalt late model race car parts based on the 76 Tyrrell P-34 GP car and rear suspension of a home made 9" center section, S10 CV shafts, and old Eldorado spindles. Might take more than a month though. 
My second kit arrived today so the build is underway. Much like a Renault Clio powered Ford Taurus, this project definitely started with the name. Introducing the Heavy Chevy:
This kit will provide the body, interior and the sweet blown 454 and the Silverado will donate the frame, 4 wheel drive system and running gear, creating a 4x4 '70 chevelle. A truly 'Heavy Chevy'
I knew there would be pains joining the two for a number of reasons, not least of all is this:
I'm going to have to take about an inch out of the wheelbase and I have no idea what that is going to do to the transfer case location, but we'll burn that bridge when we get to it.
Wish I had some of the Frankestein builds my brother and I made as kids. We'd cut the sprue trees up and make "lift kits" for cars. We made so many trars. My brother made an insanely cool Mad Max car from bits and pieces. None of them were contest quality but we had them displayed proudly on the bedroom shelf.
When I first built my Bad, Mean, and Wilding high school I simply slipped the 635 body on a monogram nascar chassis (I think it was Monogram anyway). Not this time. Tubbing the Beemer chassis the proper way. Do I turbo the 6 or go V8?

Haven't quite sunk my teeth into the NASCAR SUV, but we're almost ready to start throwing paint and glue. First thing I had to consider was the wheelbase. Eyeballing the Expedition next to the Monte Carlo chassis, the wheelbase is pretty close, but I had some concern about packaging the engine/dash/cage from the sedan to the more upright SUV body.
A trip to the kit stash unveiled the secret weapon: an unbuilt Craftsman Truck kit. Since the SUV is basically a truck with a long roof, this should line up better. It is still a Chevy, whoops. Apparently I never accumulated Ford kits for some reason.
Doing more eyeballing, the Silverado wheelbase is a tick off of the Expedition. I have some ideas that could all easily end in disaster. I could snip out the rear fender openings of the Ex and shift them backwards a bit, and fill in the gap left in the body with scrap plastic and, knowing me, a prodigious amount of filler. The other idea is even more radical: snip the lower body off of the Silverado just under the door windows and basically replace the entire sides of the Expedition. This also buys me the more correct slab-side body of a proper NASCAR product of the age. But that's a TON of cutting and pasting, who knows how that will all line up and go together nicely. I'm only going to get one chance to get it right, I imagine, and I'm not all that confident I can pull it off.
The chassis hasn't seen any glue, but some bits of it are painted. They'll be visiting the stripper and get a generic coat of gray paint before assembly.
Finally, the NASCAR SUV will need a livery when (if) it's done. While I'm hesitant about using older decals from an even older car, here's what I'm leaning towards
Progress. It's amazing how well the two different cars went together to add the tubs to the BMW.
So where do I find 1/24 or 1/25 BMWs that have actual engines I can use? Nothing coming up. The Z8 kit is mostly a curbside with no real engine. Guess I need to find any kit with some turbos to steal from it. Besides the F1 what else would have a BMW engine in it that I could steal?

The suspension mounting points really limit where I could section the frame. I took about an inch out of the center.
nowhere near as neat as the tubbed bimmer, but it'll work. I cut the centre section to clear the transmission. I'll have to make new crossmembers out of some sprues.
Sitting overnight before I clean up the joint. The interior tub will need to be notched to clear the step, but once that's done and installed this will be a solid joint.

I'm reading conflicting information on how effective this is going to be. Some say the paint can be brushed off after soaking overnight, but this red paint is from the early '90s. I can easily see myself losing patience if I don't see any progress in a day or two and just shooting paint over the red.
The Expedition body is soaking in a second container. That paint is only a year old but it's a different kind of paint (Dupli-Color rattle can) so we shall see.
I've reconsidered drastic body mods to fix the wheelbase for the time being. In the picture posted in my previous update, it looks like the distance between the fender openings is very close on both the Expedition and Silverado bodies, so I might be able to get away with not having to do serious surgery on the body to make that stuff line up. I may still use the NASCAR body sides just to make the shape and size of the wheel openings better resemble NASCAR construction, which I have to admit isn't all that stock.
The other other thought was to buy a Ford Craftsman Truck kit and build that. I could either cut the sides off that body and ut those on the Expedition body, which would probably be an easier fit since the front fenders will be a lot closer to the shape of the Expeditions. Or, for another thought, I'd cut the roof off the truck body and stick the Expedition roof in its place. That's probably the easiest way to make a NASCAR SUV, and probably the easiest strategy to have something I can't completely ruin, but I don't know if I want to spend the $30+ to buy the Ford kit off Ebay and start over.
But the more I think of this, that's probably the best way to accomplish what I want.
Can somebody please paint your model candy ruby red or sapphire blue over titanium white like I used to? It will take me years to show it on my wife's 64 Mustang piggy bank and you guys have 10 times my ambition.

Nope. Everyone paints candy ruby red over gold and candy sapphire blue over silver. The red winds up maroon and the blue looks like E36 M3. It has to be over titanium white or at least white metallic. When I first widened my stock Volvo 15x5.5 wheels to 10 and 12 inches, I forgot and painted them candy red over gold and they sucked. I also forgot when I built the 1/5 scale male plug for the female mold for the fiberglass bodied RC chainsaw powered car I never built.
I haven't built a real model for over 50 years but while shopping with my wife I discovered they have some amazing metallic lacquer finger nail polish. Anybody ever try to airbrush that stuff?
