Tmiya also now have red primer. Using the red over the gray during major shaping makes finding the highs and lows very easy. Standard auto body procedure in miniature.

Tamiya pearl on. Would be perfect except for the few stray fuzzies that found there way onto the surface. I need a better spray booth. I'll let this sit overnight or two then Testors gloss red clear in MANY light coats. Unless I find. Tamiya red clear I like.

Not sure how good this shows up in the photos. I almost want to leave it and do a full on AMG style 80s Miami Vice coke induced monochromatic paint scheme with some bold Rad era graphics.

Just want to say these model threads have some pretty cool stuff in them. I haven't done a model since I was around 12 or 13. Recently picked up a Cutlass model and want to make a mini version of my car. Been observing and the builds I see on here are way nicer than I ever did anything as a kid. Lots of good info.

On topic with the April Foolish theme is the Mud Car I did as a kid. Buick Grand National on Big Foot monster truck axles. This was also a mini version of the real Mud Car my dad had built. But that was a Cutlass on an F150 4x4 chassis. Have several memories of that rig.

Whelp, I was hoping to play it closer to the chest this time but the subject has been broached so... the Heavy Chevy:

It is a recreation of an abandoned project from long ago. An idea I had but never finished.

Most monster trucks are just tube frames with bodys dropped over them but this is an old-school body on frame kit. It's been a trick marrying the chevelle body and tub to the silverado floorpan and frame, but it's coming along.

Right now I'm trying to get the engine placement figured out. that crossmember is gonna have to go and Ill need to trim some sprues to make a propper one.

Lots of fab work up front but once that's done it should go together like it was meant to be that way.

Aww, we should do a Monster truck build as a separate challenge. I've never done one. What's the craziest monster truck a person could make?

Unrelated to the contest I'm looking for a 1/25 big block Chevy for my '65 Chevelle wagon.  Anyone got one to trade?  Preferrably with a tall tunnel ram or blower.

I believe I do from one of my Vette kits. I can check when I get home.

Haven't accomplished much over the past week. The engine's done but that's about it. I need to paint the roll cage padding and then I can start getting serious with the chassis construction. Still not brave enough to start the body mods.

Thanks for the offer, but I picked up the AMT '66 Nova Pro street at Hobby Lobby.  For $13 I figured it was like buying a "parts pack."

My contest contribution:

I planned on using it for a Carrera Panamericana road racer, but that would be a waste of this kit's best features: the double blown Hemi, chopped top, and blue translucent hood.  I'm on a weird East/West fusion kick so I think I'm going to do a mash-up of Japanese shakotan and American hot rod for a very WTF effect.

I had a dumb moment outsmarting myself (not difficult) trying to save time and wind up with smoother paint. When I was about to shoot paint on the NASCAR chassis, I figured I could get away with mounting the rear frame supplement (or something like that), the driveshaft hoop, and the transmission crossmember before paint. I even had the engine mostly assembled and test-installed it with the tranny crossmember attached to prove I could install it for real after it came out of paint.

Today I went to put the engine in the chassis and.... it won't go. Trans crossmember won't let it go. What happened? When I did the test with the semi-assembled engine, it didn't have the headers attached. Engine + headers + crossmember = not going in smoothly. I had to snap off the crossmember to get it all to work. I think I have it all back together and shouldn't even need to touch up the paint, but geez talk about a "what the...." moment.

I also had a "what the" moment when I could not find the windows for the Expedition body anywhere. Losing that would have really put me up a creek since they would be impossible to recreate short of buying another Expedition kit and stealing from that. Fortunately, the windows were found in the box of the Chevy Craftsman Truck that I was going to use for the NASCAR portion of this build, but got shelved when I decided to get a Ford kit and build that.

As for the rest of the chassis, I think I'm just about out of the painting business aside from a couple details here and there. Now it's time to start throwing glue around instead. And I still haven't ordered the decals.

Footwell space is going to be, uh, limited.

Mitigating the issue by moving the pedals to the left. I don't know how pedal brackets work so I'm hacking the pedal arms and bolting/welding (read: gluing) big spacers into them. It looks terrible but it should theoretically work, if it was real. First the brake pedal, then I'll do the gas pedal. Clutch might not have to move, the spacing doesn't look terrible there.

Folks, I need a shot of inspiration. I really want to have a reason to need the big slicks and rear end in the car. The BMW six in the 635 doesn't suit the nature of the car, but there are no reasonably priced kits with actual engines in them. I would like to keep it BMW, but am thinking I may have to go with a different powerplant. Thing is, a turbo LS doesn't really scream April Fool's! Give me options. I have BBC, SBC, and VW water-cooled engines among the kits in my stash. My devotion to Corvettes is hampering my build. Thoughts? What would make this April Fool's worthy and still honor the Pro street aesthetic? There is still time to get a kit and steel the engine from it.

Other options from my parts stash -

  • Detroit Diesel valve cover you can throw on the BMW i6 and pretend it's a diesel.
  • Radial engine.
  • Actual Top Fuel Hemi
